Raiders hang tough with Milwaukee

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program fell short to Milwaukee 72-61 on Saturday afternoon inside the Nutter. 

The Raiders dropped to 1-15 on the season and 0-6 against Horizon League opponents with their 12th loss in a row. Milwaukee improved to 6-8 overall and 4-2 in HL play.

Wright State faced a 31-21 halftime deficit but trailed by single digits for the majority of the second half. WSU cuts its deficit down to six points on multiple occasions, including at the 4:11 minute mark of the fourth quarter (61-55) after a 3-point make by Isabelle Bolender and with 1:23 left in the game (63-57) following two free throws by Kacee Baumhower

The Panthers held off the late charge by shooting 16-of-18 at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, highlighted by 11 free throw makes on 12 attempts in the last three minutes of play.

Emily Chapman paced WSU with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Kacee Baumhower poured in 11 points for her fourth consecutive double-figure scoring performance, in addition to a team-best two steals.

The Raiders finished with 10-of-28 on 3-point attempts, led by Chapman with three makes on six attempts. A pair of newcomers in Makiya Miller and Lauren Scott netted two 3-pointers.

WSU only gave away the ball 10 times while also turning 14 Milwaukee turnovers into 10 points. The Raider bench outscored MKE 21-7. 

The Panthers finished 47 percent (24-of-51) from the field and 86.4% (19-of-22) on free throws. Four of Milwaukee's five starters scored in double figures, led by Megan Walstad's 18 points. Kendall Nead earned a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. 

Wright State will continue its conference schedule on Friday, January 13, at Detroit Mercy.
