Volleyball opens weekend with Friday sweep

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team made quick work of visiting IUPUI on Friday night, sweeping the visiting Jaguars in Horizon League action inside McLin Gymnasium.
 
Wright State (10-9, 6-2 Horizon) jumped out of the gate with set wins of 25-7 and 25-15 to begin the night before a 25-22 third set to complete the sweep. The Raiders finished the sweep hitting .304 as a group, including tallying a .429 mark in the opening set. IUPUI (8-11, 2-6 Horizon) recorded just 12 combined kills between the opening two sets and finished the night hitting .018 thanks to a .200 hitting percentage and 17 kills in set three.
 
The Raiders are back in action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Purdue Fort Wayne inside McLin Gymnasium in a 4 p.m. start. Fans can follow the action via live stats.
 
On Friday, Wright State dominated at the net, finishing with 14 blocks from six different Raiders, paced by Reilly Zegunis' seven block assists. Callie Martin added six block assists and a solo block of her own while Aaliyah Byers stuffed five block assists. Katie Meyer (three block assists), Megan Alders (two block assists, one solo block) and Sam Ott (one block assist) were also in on the action at the net.
 
Zegunis also led the way offensively, finishing with a match-best 12 kills on 14 attempts (.786 percentage) as the lone player on either side with double digit kills. Alders added seven kills while Martin tallied six. The Raiders were also a force at the service line, finishing with eight service aces, including three from Jenny Morey and a pair from Jenny Wessling. Meyer passed out 25 of the Raiders' 31 assists while Wessling finished with a match-best 13 digs.
 
SET ONE
Tied at 2-2 in the opening moments, the Raiders rolled off 12 straight points behind kills from four players and four IUPUI attacking errors. After trading points, Wright State wrapped up the set with eight of the final nine points thanks in part to five IUPUI errors and a service ace from Morey to take the opener 25-7.
 
SET TWO
Close for the first half of the set, neither side gained an advantage as a three-point run for IUPUI pulled them to within one at 15-14. Wright State proceeded to tally the next five points and 10 of the final 11 points of the set to pull away thanks to kills from Martin, Ott and Zegunis along with five IUPUI errors.
 
SET THREE
The most competitive set of the three, IUPUI led 8-4 early before the sides traded points through the midway point of the set, with the visitors using a four-point run to take a 20-19 lead late. The Raiders responded with four of the next five points thanks to four IUPUI errors before the visitors pulled to within one at 23-22 thanks to a kill. Wright State closed the night from there, getting to set point off a final IUPUI error before Zegunis recorded a kill to wrap things up.
