Raiders notch second sweep of the weekend

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team tallied its second straight three set sweep of the weekend on Saturday afternoon over Purdue Fort Wayne in Horizon League action inside McLin Gymnasium.

Wright State (11-9, 7-2 Horizon) was led by Callie Martin, who delivered her ninth double-double of the year with a 12 kill, 11 dig effort while adding a pair of service aces, one solo block and one block assist.

The Raiders are back at home on Tuesday night as they welcome Youngstown State to town for a 6 p.m. start. Tuesday's match is expected to be streamed on ESPN+. Wright State swept the Penguins on the road back in late September.

On Saturday, the Raiders finished the sweep hitting .282 as a group after starting things off with a .357 mark in the opening set, while Purdue Fort Wayne (7-14, 2-7 Horizon) hit just .126 as a group for the afternoon.

Behind Martin, Wright State saw Megan Alders and Aaliyah Byers each finish with nine kills while Sam Ott added six kills and had 13 digs. Jenny Wessling and Andrea Bortulin joined Martin with two service aces each, while Wessling collected a match-best 20 digs and Katie Meyer passed out 34 of the Raiders' 42 assists.

SET ONE
Back-and-forth early in the set, the Raiders used a four-point run to gain some separation behind a trio of Purdue Fort Wayne errors before Wright State put the set out of reach with a 6-1 stretch thanks to a pair of kills from Martin and a Wessling service ace, later closing the set at 25-15.

SET TWO
A set of runs for both sides, Wright State had a pair of four-point runs but was unable to pull away, with Purdue Fort Wayne using a 5-1 stretch to stay in the set at the midway point before the visitors had a 4-0 run of their own to pull within one late at 23-22. The Raiders used a PFW attacking error to get to set point, and after a kill from Purdue Fort Wayne cut it back to one, Martin closed the set with a kill.

SET THREE
The teams traded points through the middle of the set before Wright State took control. The Raiders rolled off four straight points as part of a larger 9-1 stretch thanks to three kills from Ott and a pair of Martin service aces to push the advantage to 21-12. Wright State later closed the set and the afternoon with two kills from Byers to complete the sweep.
