Zegunis' career night leads Raiders to Tuesday win

DAYTON - Reilly Zegunis tallied a career-best 23 kills on Tuesday night as the Wright State volleyball team opened a busy week with a four-set victory over visiting Robert Morris inside McLin Gymnasium in Horizon League action.

Wright State (13-10, 9-3 Horizon) now hits the road for a pair of important matches, traveling to take on Cleveland State Friday night before a visit to Oakland on Saturday. Fans can follow live stats for both matches, while Saturday's match is expected to be streamed on ESPN+.

On Tuesday, Zegunis recorded her 23 kills with a .500 hitting percentage, racking up seven kills on a perfect hitting mark in the opening set to get her career night going. As a group, Wright State hit .600 in the opening set the Raiders took 25-7 before they finished the night hitting .299 as a group. The Raiders had nearly double the number of kills (61-34) as RMU (6-18, 3-10 Horizon), who took the second set 25-21 for their lone set win of the night.

Behind Zegunis, three other Raiders also had double digit kills, with Aaliyah Byers tallying 11 kills and both Megan Alders and Sam Ott finishing with 10 kills. Ott notched another double-double, adding 13 digs to her 10 kills, finishing with three service aces as well. Wright State finished with 10 service aces as a group, with five from Andrea Bortulin leading the way. Katie Meyer passed out 48 of the Raiders' 55 assists while Jenny Wessling had a match-best 25 digs.

SET ONE
After RMU took two of the first three points, the Raiders scored the next five points and never looked back. A 14-1 stretch for Wright State put the set out of reach, aided by four kills from Zegunis and a pair of service aces from Ott.

SET TWO
Both sides had early runs, with RMU grabbing four straight points before the Raiders responded with four in a row of their own. A 7-1 run by the visitors gave RMU a 15-9 advantage before Wright State pulled back into the set and to within three at 23-20. RMU closed the set with two of the final three points.

SET THREE
An 9-2 run by the Raiders thanks to four kills from Zegunis and kills from Alders and Ott gave Wright State a 13-7 lead at the midway point of the set. RMU responded with a stretch of five of six points to pull back into the set before the Raiders used a 5-1 run to win the set behind two kills from Byers and additional kills from Callie Martin, Ott and Zegunis.

SET FOUR
The sides traded mini three- or four-point spurts throughout the early going, with a 6-0 Raider run thanks to four straight Bortulin service aces pushing the margin to 23-12. After RMU tallied three of the next four points, Alders ended the night with her final kill to secure the win.
