ROCHESTER, MI – The Wright State volleyball team took care of host Oakland in four sets on Saturday afternoon as four Raiders finished with double digit kills.
Wright State (15-10, 11-3 Horizon) now returns home next weekend for its final home matches of the regular season, welcoming Milwaukee for a Friday matchup before hosting Green Bay next Saturday.
Against Oakland (15-11, 9-5 Horizon), the Raiders handled the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-11 before dropping a back-and-forth third set 29-27. Wright State then closed things out with a 25-18 fourth set win.
Four Raiders finished with double digit kills, led by
Reilly Zegunis' match-high 16 kills, while
Megan Alders and
Sam Ott each had 12 kills &
Aaliyah Byers added 10 kills. Ott notched her fifth double-double of the season after she collected 10 digs to go with her 12 kills, marking her third double-double in the last four matches.
Katie Meyer added a double-double of her own with 16 digs while passing out 49 of the Raiders' 59 assists.
Jenny Wessling finished with a match-best 23 digs and
Jenny Morey added 18 digs of her own.
Wright State collected nine service aces in the win, including two each from
Andrea Bortulin, Martin, Morey and Ott.
SET ONE
Tight throughout the set, Oakland tallied back-to-back points to take a 14-13 advantage before Wright State rolled off six straight points thanks to kills from Martin and Ott to grab a five-point lead. The hosts responded with a 5-1 run to pull within one again, but the Raiders closed the set with four of the final five points behind kills from Alders, Martin and Zegunis and a service aces from Ott.
SET TWO
After trading points in the opening moments, the Raiders recorded six straight points to gain separation and push to a 12-5 advantage. After Oakland tried to pull back into the set, Wright State rolled off four straight points as part of a larger 9-1 run to close the set at 25-11 thanks to multiple kills from both Martin and Ott.
SET THREE
Back-and-forth all set as neither side could gain separation, Wright State tallied three straight points thanks to a pair of kills from Zegunis and a service ace from Martin to push to set point at 25-24. The sides alternated the next four points, with the Raiders again at set point after an Alders kills pushed them to 27-26. Oakland responded with the final three points behind a trio of Raider errors to take the set 29-27.
SET FOUR
A one-point margin in the early going, Wright State pulled away with seven straight points to take a 14-6 lead thanks in part to four Oakland errors. The Raiders never lost momentum from there, closing the night with back-to-back kills from Byers and Alders to wrap things up.
