DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball senior class did not disappoint Friday on Senior Night, leading the Raiders to a four-set victory over Milwaukee inside McLin Gymnasium to move into first place in the Horizon League standings.
Wright State (16-10, 12-3 Horizon) now gets set to close out its home regular season schedule tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. against Green Bay, who has now won four in a row after its Friday night win and will come into the match one game back in the Horizon League standings at 11-4 in League play. Wright State won the first matchup in five sets back in early October.
On Friday, fifth-year seniors
Megan Alders,
Callie Martin and
Katie Meyer led the way, with Alders tallying a match-best 17 kills and Martin collecting a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs while Meyer passed out 49 of the Raiders' 58 assists.
Alders, Martin and Meyer were celebrated after the match as well.
Following that trio,
Sam Ott and
Reilly Zegunis each added 13 kills and
Jenny Morey connected on three of Wright State's five service aces.
Jenny Wessling finished with a match-high 19 digs with Morey following with 13 digs and Martin's 10, while Ott just missed a double-double with nine digs.
SET ONE
Wright State jumped ahead with six of the first eight points before eventually pulled back even at 13-all. From there, the sides traded two- and three-point spurts, with the Raiders using a Zegunis kill to take a 23-21 lead before closing the set moments later behind back-to-back errors from the visitors. Martin tallied seven kills in the set as the Raiders hit .342 in the opening set.
SET TWO
Tight in the early going, the Raiders rolled off five straight points thanks in part to a pair of kills from Zegunis to take a 15-11 advantage. After Milwaukee pulled within two at 16-14, Wright State cruised to the end of the set with nine of the final 12 points, thanks to kills from Alders, Martin, Ott and
Aaliyah Byers, along with five Milwaukee errors.
SET THREE
Back-and-forth throughout the set, Wright State used a 6-1 run thanks in part to four Milwaukee errors to pull even at 20-all. The visitors responded with three straight points, closing the set moments later to take the 25-22 set win.
SET FOUR
The Raiders jumped out early with eight of the first 11 points behind three kills and an ace from Martin before they withstood a run from Milwaukee, who eventually pulled within one at 18-17 after tallying five of six points. Wright State shut the door from there, scoring seven of the final nine points of the night behind three kills from Alders to grab the set 25-19.
