Byers' career night highlights five-set road win

GREEN BAY – The Wright State volleyball team stormed back to take sets four and five on Friday night for a five-set comeback road victory over Green Bay in Horizon League action.

The Raiders (9-8, 5-1 Horizon) saved their best for down the stretch, tallying nine of the final 10 points in the fourth set to force the deciding set before closing the night and grabbing the win with seven of the final nine points in the fifth set to hand Green Bay (7-11, 5-1 Horizon) its first League loss of the season.

Wright State now has a quick turnaround to take on Milwaukee Saturday afternoon in a 5 p.m. ET start. That match is expected to be streamed on ESPN+.

Wright State got monster nights throughout the lineup, with Aaliyah Byers turning in a career-high 20 kills, including 16 in the first three sets, to lead all players. Sam Ott finished with 13 kills and Megan Alders had 12 of her own, while Callie Martin turned in her third straight double-double effort with 13 kills and 12 digs. Martin added to her stat line with six blocks and three service aces, both match bests.

Katie Meyer passed out 40 assists in her return to the lineup while Andrea Bortulin also had double-digit helps with 14. Jenny Wessling collected a match-high 24 digs as she and Martin were both in double digits, with Meyer just missing a double-double of her own with nine digs.

SET ONE
Green Bay tallied five of the first seven points before the Raiders roared back, rolling off six straight to take the momentary advantage. From there the teams traded points throughout the middle of the set, with Wright State closing the set with six of the final nine points after the sides were tied at 19-all.

SET TWO
The hosts used a five-point run early in the set to gain some breathing room before Wright State chipped away throughout the rest of the set. Trailing 22-15, the Raiders tallied five of the next six points before Green Bay got to set point. After a kill from Alders and an Ott service ace, Green Bay was able to close the set with a final kill.

SET THREE
Green Bay jumped ahead early and didn't look back, using an 8-1 run early to get all the momentum it needed. The Raiders used a 6-1 run late in the set to try and turn the tides but the hosts' advantage was too much and they took the set 25-18.

SET FOUR
Wright State bolted out to an early advantage in a set the Raiders needed to have, only to see Green Bay respond with six straight points to pull back into things. A 3-1 Green Bay spurt gave the hosts a 19-15 advantage before Wright State answered in grand fashion, tallying the next nine points behind kills from Martin, Byers and Ott to force the deciding set.

SET FIVE
Neither side was able to gain an edge as the teams traded points the majority of the set, with back-to-back points giving Green Bay a 10-8 advantage. The Raiders came alive from there, rolling off four of the next five points thanks to kills from Byers and Martin, along with a pair of GB errors. After the hosts momentarily knotted the score at 12-all, Martin closed things out all on her own, ending the night with a kill, service ace and a final kill to give the Raiders the win.
