Volleyball stumbles in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE – The Wright State volleyball team fell in four sets at Milwaukee Saturday night despite a pair of double-doubles from Callie Martin and Katie Meyer.

Wright State (9-9, 5-2 Horizon) now returns home for a pair of matches next week, taking on IUPUI on Friday night before welcoming Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday afternoon to McLin Gymnasium. Fans can follow live stats of both matches and Friday's match is expected to be streamed on ESPN+.

Against Milwaukee (14-7, 6-1 Horizon) the Raiders dropped a tight opening set before bouncing back to take set two and later falling in a pair of close sets three and four.

Wright State was led by Callie Martin and Katie Meyer, with Martin tallying 20 kills and 10 digs as Meyer added 14 digs to go along with her match-best 43 assists. The 43 assists pushed Meyer past the 1,000-assist mark in her career, now sitting at 1,030 career helpers entering the new weekend. Megan Alders also finished with double-digit kills with 12 while Sam Ott collected eight kills and filled her stat line with 16 digs, three blocks and two service aces.

SET ONE
Neither side was able to pull away in a tight set throughout, with the biggest runs a three-point stretch by each team. Down three late in the set, Wright State tallied two straight points thanks to an Ott kill and a Milwaukee error before the hosts scored four of the final five points of the set to jump out to the early lead.

SET TWO
Wright State scored eight of the first 11 points in the set before stretching the margin to 13-4 behind a five-point run. The Raiders were in control all set, coming down the stretch with kills from Ott and Alders to tie the afternoon up.

SET THREE
A tight set early as both sides traded points, the Raiders used a Reilly Zegunis kill to pull within two at 17-15 before Milwaukee took full control of the set. The hosts tallied the next seven points, aided by four Raider errors, to get to set point before closing the set moments later.

SET FOUR
The Raiders jumped ahead early with six of the first eight points before Milwaukee chipped away. The hosts never led in the set until a four-point run gave them a 19-18 advantage, which was immediately answered by three straight Raider points. From there, Milwaukee ended the set and the night with six of the final seven points.
