EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Wright State women's basketball program fell to Michigan State 99-55 on Sunday afternoon inside the Breslin Center.
Cara Vankempen led the Raiders (0-2) with a team-high 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting and a 4-of-5 mark on 3-pointers.
Makiya Miller chipped in with nine points and a team-best six assists, while
Layne Ferrell finished 4-of-7 from the field en route to nine points.
Wright State's defense forced 13 turnovers, including eight by way of steal.
Jada Tate, Miller, and VanKempen had two steals apiece.
Rachel Loobie grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.
Michigan State (2-0) shot 56.1 percent (37-of-66) overall and 45% (9-of-20) on 3-pointers, scoring 20-plus points in the last three quarters of play. Meanwhile, WSU was held to a 37.3% (22-of-59) shooting mark and six threes on 24 attempts.
WSU started the non-conference matchup in the right direction, as five consecutive points by
Kacee Baumhower on a layup and a 3-pointer put the Raiders in front 19-15 with 1:53 left in the opening quarter. The Spartans closed the quarter on a 4-0 run to tie the game at 19-all.
Wright State shot an efficient 50% (7-of-14) in the first 10 minutes of action, which included a 42.9% (3-of-7) mark from beyond the arc. Ferrell and Baumhower paced the early start with five points apiece.
Michigan State began the second quarter with a pair of 3-pointers, but VanKempen netted a shot from deep to reduce WSU's deficit to 25-22 at the 7:54 minute mark. The Spartans then went on a 24-2 run over the remaining seven minutes of the first half to enter the break leading 49-24.
Wright State made just two shots in the second quarter while allowing MSU to go 57.1% (12-of-21) from the field and grab five offensive rebounds.
The Spartans kept the momentum on their side coming out of the half, outscoring WSU 28-18 in the third quarter to increase its edge to 77-42. Miller was Wright State's top offensive contributor, with seven points on 3-of-3 shooting in the 10-minute span.
The Raiders finished with 13 points in the fourth quarter on their way to a 99-55 loss.
Macie Taylor scored her first collegiate basket in the final period. Tate provided a spark off the bench with four points on 2-of-3 shooting.
Wright State will return to action on Tuesday, November 14, for its home opener against Mount Vernon Nazarene. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
