Raiders fall at Cleveland State in road finale

CLEVELAND — The Wright State women's basketball program concluded its regular-season road schedule with an 87-49 loss at Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon inside the Wolstein Center. 

The Raiders dropped to 5-23 overall and 4-14 in Horizon League action, while Cleveland State won its ninth-straight game to improve to 26-3 on the season and 16-2 against conference opponents. 

Emily Chapman was the lone Raider to score in double figures, as she finished with 10 points in addition to five assists and one steal. Cara VanKempen totaled nine points on 4-of-8 shooting, while Bryce Nixon added eight first-half points.

The Raiders finished 34 percent (18-of-53) from the field, which included a 24.1% (7-of-29) mark in the second half. CSU shot 53.2% (33-of-62) overall and 53.8% (7-of-13) while also edging Wright State in points in the paint (52-18), points off turnovers (29-7), second-chance points (13-3), bench points (28-16), and rebounding (42-27). 

Wright State opened the game on a strong note, as back-to-back 3-pointers by Nixon and VanKempen gave the Raiders a 10-7 lead at the 5:44 minute mark of the opening quarter. A layup by Taylor Johnson-Matthews increased WSU's advantage to 15-11 with 3:39 to go in the period. However, the Vikings followed with a 13-2 run to conclude the first in front 24-17. 

CSU built its lead to 34-25 with 6:43 left in the second quarter, but Chapman hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the Raider deficit to 34-31 at the 5:17 minute mark. WSU was scoreless for the remaining five minutes of the first period, leading to a 38-31 halftime deficit. 

Chapman tallied eight points and four assists in the opening half, while Nixon had eight points on 3-of-6 shooting and a 2-of-3 from beyond the arc to keep the Raiders within reach. 

Wright State was outscored 22-8 in the third quarter and 27-10 in the fourth quarter to seal its third loss in a row. The Raiders were limited to one 3-point make on 14 attempts in the span. 

Cleveland State finished with four players in double figures, led by Amele Ngwafang with a game-high 25 points. 

WSU will conclude its regular season at home against Oakland on Thursday, February 23, and Detroit Mercy on Saturday, February 25.
