DAYTON — The Wright State baseball program defeated Toledo 6-2 for its third consecutive victory on Wednesday at Nischwitz Stadium.
The Raiders improved to 6-9 on the season and will conclude their eight-game homestand with a three-game series versus Purdue Fort Wayne, starting on Friday, March 17.
Wright State's pitching staff stood out in the midweek win, limiting Toledo (9-6) to just two runs on nine hits and two walks compared to six strikeouts.
Josh Laisure (1-0) was credited with the winning decision after blanking the visitors in the third frame.
Tristan Haught entered in the top of the eighth with the Raiders up 4-1 and pitched the remainder of the game to earn his first save of the 2023 campaign.
Alex Theis fired two scoreless innings with two strikeouts out of the bullpen.
Calvin Mitchell,
Chris Gallagher, and
Joey Valentine also finished with scoreless outings in relief.
WSU was errorless for the third time this season, inducing Toledo to 13 fly outs and seven groundouts in the defensive effort.
Wright State totaled 11 hits offensively, including five for extras bases, while adding five walks and five stolen bases.
Andrew Patrick finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a walk.
Gehrig Anglin tallied team-leading marks in walks (3), runs scored (2), and stolen bases (2).
Sammy Sass,
Boston Smith, and
Ben Stoner recorded two-hit performances, while
Parker Harrison had an RBI triple for his lone hit of the day.
The Rockets struck first with an RBI single in the top of the first inning. However, Patrick led off the bottom of the frame with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Anglin to tie the game at 1-all.
WSU claimed a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the third inning, as Anglin notched a leadoff walk and reached home on an RBI triple by Harrison.
Anglin had another leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth and Sass followed with a double to give Wright State a pair of runners in scoring position. Both touched home following a wild pitch and throwing error by the Rockets.
Toledo closed its deficit to 4-2 with a solo homer in the top of the eighth, but the Raiders responded with two runs on three hits and a walk in the bottom half of the inning to cushion its edge to 6-2. Stoner drove in a run on a single while
Luke Arnold scored from third on a wild pitch in the frame.
Haught then blanked the Rockets in the ninth inning to seal the Raider victory.
