DAYTON — The Wright State baseball program took down Purdue Fort Wayne 6-2 in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Nischwitz Stadium.
With the series knotted at one game apiece, the Raiders (7-10, 1-1 HL) and Mastodons (4-15, 1-1 HL) will conclude the three-game set on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Raider pitching staff bounded back with a season-low three hits given up in the victory. Starting pitcher
Sebastian Gongora (2-1) earned the winning decision after allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out five batters in five innings. The left-hander carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning and retired the side in order twice.
Josh Laisure held PFW off the scoreboard in 1.1 innings of work out of the pen.
Alex Theis received his first save of the 2023 campaign, firing 2.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Theis punched out two batters in the eighth and ninth frames.
Wright State finished with eight hits and five walks offensively.
Jay Luikart paced the Raiders by going 2-for-5 at the plate with an RBI double and a run scored.
Carson Clark reached base three times on an RBI double and two walks, while
Boston Smith notched two singles and a run.
Sammy Sass and
Ben Stoner both had RBI singles for their lone hits of the game.
WSU got out to a hot start, scoring three runs on two hits and two walks in the opening frame. Luikart started the scoring with an RBI double and reached home on a single by Sass. Anglin stole third base with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Parker Harrison to extend the Raider lead to 3-0.
The Mastodons cut their deficit to 3-2 with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning. However, Wright State scored once on an RBI single by Stoner in the bottom of the frame to push its edge to 4-2.
Clark doubled in Harrison for his first collegiate hit in the bottom of the sixth, while Patrick walked with the bases loaded in the eighth to extend WSU's edge to 6-2.
Theis blanked Purdue Fort Wayne with two strikeouts in the ninth to seal the win.
