DAYTON — The Wright State baseball program powered past Miami (OH) 23-7 in its home opener at Nischwitz Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wright State (3-8) lineup accounted for 12 hits and a season-high 19 walks in the victory. Six Raiders recorded two or more walks, while four players had multi-hit performances. WSU scored in five innings, highlighted by an 11-spot in the bottom of the fourth.
Andrew Patrick reached base in all five plate appearances with two triples, a bunt single, and two walks.
Justin Riemer walked a game-leading five times, tied for the second-highest mark by an NCAA Division I baseball player this season.
Gehrig Anglin finished with three doubles and three runs batted in, while
Parker Harrison added a pair of doubles and three RBI.
Luke Arnold and
Ben Stoner both homered for Wright State. Arnold batted 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and two walks.
Ben Stoner delivered a pinch-hit grand slam for his first collegiate homer in the bottom of the eighth inning.
WSU also stole a season-high seven bases, paced by
Dane Thomas, Patrick, and Riemer with two steals apiece.
The Raider pitching staff held the Redhawks (2-10) to seven hits while striking out a season-high 14 batters. Starting pitcher
Tristan Haught opened the game with three scoreless and hitless innings before allowing four runs in the top of the fourth.
Warren Hartzell (1-0) earned the winning decision after retiring the side in order in his lone inning of work.
Alex Theis and
Josh Laisure also fired scoreless outings in an inning of relief.
Wright State scored twice on an error and an RBI triple by Patrick in the opening inning but found itself trailing 4-2 after Miami's four-run fourth inning.
The deficit did not last for long, as the Raiders responded with 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to gain a 13-4 advantage. The fourth frame saw Wright State send 17 batters to the plate, tallying the 11 runs on four hits and ten walks. The scoring spurt included seven bases-loaded walks and three runs driven on two doubles by Harrison.
WSU scored once on an error in the fifth inning and put the game out of reach with a five-spot in the bottom of the seventh inning, pushing its lead to 19-6. Arnold started the scoring in the seventh with a two-run homer, while Anglin followed with a three-run double.
Wright State loaded the bases with three free passes in the bottom of the eighth inning. Stoner then capitalized in his first at-bat of the game with a two-out grand slam to build the Raider edge to 23-6.
Miami scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth, but relief pitcher
Ty Roder recorded a strikeout for the final out to seal Wright State's ninth consecutive win in a home opener.
The Raiders will continue their home slate with a three-game series versus Army from March 10-12 at Nischwitz Stadium.
