CINCINNATI — The Wright State baseball program fell to Xavier 6-2 in the Joe Nuxhall Classic title game on Tuesday afternoon at UC Baseball Stadium.
Julian Greenwell hit a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning for the Raiders. However, Wright State (16-16) scored just one run for the remainder of the game, which came on an RBI single by Patrick Fultz in the top of the seventh.
Xavier (21-12) took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third inning and added three runs in the bottom of the sixth and a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth to seal its 11th victory in a row.
The Raiders finished with six hits and three walks in the loss, stranding eight runners on base. Sammy Sass reached base three times on two singles and a hit by pitch in addition to scoring WSU's second run. Greenwell's leadoff homer and Fultz's RBI single were their lone hits of the day. Dane Thomas contributed with a single and a walk over four plate appearances.
Trailing 5-2 in the top of the seventh, Wright State had the bases juiced with just one out. However, the Raiders left all three runners on base after consecutive flyouts to conclude the frame.
Starting pitcher Josh Laisure lasted a career-high 5.1 innings on the mound, allowing four runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out three batters. Tristan Haught was tagged for an unearned run on three hits in two-thirds of an inning in relief for Laisure. Warren Hartzell gave up one run on two hits and a walk in two innings out of the bullpen.
Wright State was errorless for the tenth time this season, but a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth inning led to an unearned run for the Musketeers.
The Raiders will return to action on Wednesday, April 12, at Toledo. WSU defeated the Rockets 6-2 in the first meeting between the two programs in March 2023.
