Raiders third after HL first round; three inside Top 10 individually

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FL – The Wright State golf team opened its title defense at the Horizon League Championship with an eight-over 296 team round on Sunday, as the Raiders sit in third overall as a group after the opening round at Mission Inn Resort with three individuals inside the top 10.

Action continues in Florida on Monday with 18 holes in the second round, with the Raiders set to tee off between 7:30 and 8:10 a.m., all from the 10th tee.

As a group, the Raiders had 60 pars Sunday, which was tied for the most in the tournament with Purdue Fort Wayne, while Wright State was one of five teams to tally 11 birdies as a group, behind only Oakland's 14 birdies. Purdue Fort Wayne (+2) holds the 18-hole lead with Oakland (+4) in second and then the Raiders.

Defending individual champion Mikkel Mathiesen scattered three birdies and three bogeys around his scorecard for an even par round of 72 and sits in a tie for fourth individually, three shots behind co-leaders Kasey Lilly of Purdue Fort Wayne and Oakland's Yaro Ilyenko. Okaland's Colin Sikkenga is in third alone after 18 holes at one-under.

Just behind Mathiesen is a pair of Raider teammates, with Tyler Goecke one-over in a tie for sixth after his opening round 73 with two birdies helping to negate a triple bogey on the par four seventh hole early in his round. Davis Root is two-over in a tie for 10th after his opening round 74 that saw four birdies counterbalance a triple bogey and a double bogey on his scorecard.

Cole Corder sits at five-over in a tie for 27th after his 77 on Sunday, while Andrew Flynn carded a six-over 78 and is tied for 30th after 18 holes.
