Raiders grab #HLGolf awards, Goecke earns second Golfer of the Year

DAYTON/INDIANAPOLIS – The Wright State golf team is heavily represented in the Horizon League's end of the year awards, as Tyler Goecke captured his second straight Golfer of the Year honor and Shane Ochs named the Freshman of the Year.

In addition to the two major awards, Goecke was joined on the All-League First Team by Mikkel Mathiesen for the second year in a row, while Cole Corder and Davis Root earned Second Team honors. Goecke and Mathiesen are now both three-time HL first team selections, while Corder tallied his second-straight second team selection.

Goecke becomes the sixth Raider in program history to be named the Horizon League's Golfer of the Year, and the first to win the award multiple times. Other Raiders to have earned top League honors include Ryan Wenzler (2017), Nick Scott (2015), Jesse Hutchins (2003) and John Schones II (2002).

Ochs is now the eighth Wright State player to earn Horizon League Freshman of the Year honors and the first since former Raider standout Bryce Haney earned the nod in 2018. Other Raiders to have been named top freshman include Brandon Knutson (2004), Marty Miller (2003), Schones II (2000), Joe Osmon (1997), Scott Hailes (1996), Jon Eggleton (1995).

Goecke captured the 2023 Horizon League Championship individual title earlier this week, his second individual victory of the season, joining his win at the Xavier Invitational, while he added four second place finishes and finished inside the top 10 in 10 of 11 tournaments spanning the fall and spring slates. Ochs recorded a win at the Ohio Dominican Bill Blazer Memorial while also finishing second at the Wright State Invitational and had a third-place finish at the Jewell Invitational.

Mathiesen had three individual wins this season (Earl Yestingmeier Invitational, Sea Palms Invitational, Wright State Invitational) and added four other top 10 finishes to his season resume. Corder notched a pair of top 10 finishes (2nd, Loyola Intercollegiate; 8th Earl Yestingmeier Invitational) this season while Root added two top 10 finishes of his own (3rd, Border Olympics; 6th Earl Yestingmeier Invitational).

The Raiders tallied three team tournament wins in 11 total events spanning the fall and spring schedule, adding four second place finishes as they were sixth or better in all 11 events in 2022-23.
