Missed chances hurt Raiders in 6-3 loss to Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE — The Wright State baseball program stranded a season-high 16 runners on base and committed three errors en route to a 6-3 loss to Milwaukee on Thursday afternoon at Franklin Field.

The Raiders dropped to 16-13 overall and 7-3 in the Horizon League, while Milwaukee improved to 11-14 on the season and 3-6 against conference opponents. The three-game series will resume tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET. on ESPN+.

Andrew Patrick and Sammy Sass led the Raiders at the plate with three-hit performances. Patrick homered in WSU's first run of the game, while Sass finished with three singles. Julian Greenwell batted 2-for-5 with an RBI double. Luke Arnold added a run batted in on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Patrick Fultz walked a team-high two times.

Wright State had several opportunities to reach the scoreboard with 10 hits and seven walks. However, the Raiders left multiple runners on base in six innings, including the bases loaded in the first, seventh, and ninth frames.

Starting pitcher Jake Shirk (2-4) took the loss after giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits and no walks in 5.1 innings. Alex Theis was tagged for two unearned runs on a hit and a walk in 1.2 innings of relief, while Warren Hartzell recorded two strikeouts in a scoreless inning of work.

The Raider defense tied a season high in errors with three, which led to four unearned runs scored by the Panthers.

Milwaukee gained an early 1-0 advantage in the conference contest, but Patrick tied the game at 1-all with a solo homer to lead off the top of the third.

The Panthers got back in front with a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth and a two-run homer in the following frame.

WSU cut its deficit to 4-2 in the top of the seventh as Arnold was plunked with the bases loaded. However, Wright State's next batter flew out to center with the bases juiced to end the potential scoring opportunity.

MKE extended its edge to 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh after plating two unearned runs on a two-out, two-run double.

Jay Luikart recorded a leadoff single in the top of the ninth and reached home on a two-out, two-strike double off the bat of Greenwell. Carson Clark and Dane Thomas followed with walks to load the bases and bring the go-ahead run in Patrick to the plate. He went on to go down swinging, sealing the Raider loss.
