Track and Field set for Horizon League Outdoor Championship

DAYTON — The Wright State track and field program will compete at the Horizon League Outdoor Championship from May 5-7 at the Farmers National Bank Field in Youngstown, Ohio.

The three-day conference meet, hosted by Youngstown State, will commence on Friday at noon with the decathlon and the discus. Running events will start at 7:20 p.m. with the 1,500-meter prelims. 

Action will resume on Saturday at 9 p.m. with the final bunch of decathlon events. Field events will get going at noon, leading to running events at 4 p.m. The meet will conclude on Sunday with field events at 9 a.m. and races at noon. 

All three days will air on ESPN+. Tickets will be available at both spectator entrances. Day passes are $15 for adults and $5 for children (12 & under) and seniors (65 & up). Horizon League institution students receive free admission.

CHAMPIONSHIP REWIND
The Wright State women's track and field team placed 10th with 18 points at the 2022 Horizon League Outdoor Championship. Abigail Halsey won the 3K steeplechase for the second-straight year, racing to a time of 10:56.30, 13 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher. Bekah Robertson earned sixth overall in the heptathlon with 4,104 points, while Alicia Neumeier tallied a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:17.06). The Raiders added a podium finish in the high jump, as Cierra Lively finished eighth overall with a clearance of 1.54 meters.

The championship meet will be the first for the men's team, which was added for the 2022-23 season.

LAST TIME OUT
WSU concluded the regular-season portion of its outdoor schedule at the RedHawk Invitational last Saturday.

>> The Raiders collected a pair of victories in the 800-meter run at the George L. Rider Track. Alicia Neumeier took first on the women's side with a time of 2:13.53. Ian Johnson raced to a winning time of 1:52.59 for the Raider men. Patrick Statzer (6th, 1:58.29), Michael Cole (10th, 2:00.27), and John Steimle (14th, 2:03.95) followed Johnson in the race.

>> Cierra Lively tied for second overall in the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.59 meters.

>> Mia Wyngarden had a strong showing in the women's 400-meter run, earning third overall with a time of 58.22. Kylee Thomas was sixth in the race in 59.60 seconds. 

>> Melissa Siler took part in two events, placing fifth in the women's 100-meter dash (13.43) and 12th in the women's shot put (9.68m). 

>> Emma Shigley paced the Raiders in the women's 1,500-meter run, taking fifth out of 10 competitors with a time of 4:52.57. Anna Johnson was ninth in the event at 5:19.21.

>> In the men's 1,500-meter race, Ethan Neblock was ninth out of 21 runners with a time of 4:05.57, followed by Nathan Sheriff in 19th (4:48.65). 

>> Anthony Jiovani and Andy Neff were the meet's lone competitors in their respective events. Jiovani cleared 2.75 meters in the men's pole vault, while Neff had a top mark of 1.75 meters in the men's high jump.

RUNNER OF THE WEEK
Alicia Neumeier earned Horizon League Women's Runner of the Week after winning the 800-meter run at last Saturday's RedHawk Invitational with a season-best time of 2:13.53. The winning mark was the second-fastest time by a Horizon League student-athlete this season.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Cierra Lively was named Horizon League Women's Athlete of the Week on March 28 after setting an outdoor school record in the high jump at the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open with a clearance of 1.63 meters. She placed second out of 23 competitors in the event and bested the previous school record mark of 1.60 meters, which was last set in 2015 by Kalyn Daniels.
