DAYTON — Wright State's Luke Stofel signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday afternoon.Â
Stofel becomes the first Wright State player to begin his professional career with Detroit since the Tigers drafted former standout Busty Beam in the 20th round of the 1999 MLB Draft.Â
The Lawrenceburg, Tennessee native is the second Raider to sign a professional contract in Major League Baseball this summer, following Justin Riemer, who the Boston Red Box selected with the 133rd pick in the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft.Â
Stofel made an immediate impact in his lone season with the Raiders, going 5-6 overall with a 3.83 earned run average and 64 strikeouts in 80.0 innings as Wright State's Sunday starter. He finished the year with top-10 Horizon League marks in ERA (2nd), opposing batting average (5th, .256), innings pitched (6th), and strikeouts (8th).Â
The 6-foot-5 right-hander earned Horizon League All-Tournament Team honors after firing a complete game against Milwaukee in the tournament quarterfinals. Stofel made his first start of the season at No. 8 Arkansas, limiting the Razorbacks to two runs, one earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out six batters in six innings of work. He struck out five or more batters in seven starts.
Before Wright State, Stofel spent two seasons at Western Kentucky, appearing in 29 games while making 14 starts. He compiled 30-plus innings of work each year, including 36.0 innings as a sophomore.
