Volleyball rolls to a sweep at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Wright State volleyball team remained perfect early in the Horizon League season with a three-set sweep over Youngstown State on the road Tuesday night.

Wright State (7-7, 3-0 Horizon) now returns home for a pair of matches inside McLin Gymnasium this weekend, hosting Oakland Friday night at 6 p.m. and Cleveland State at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Both of this weekend's matches are expected to be streamed on ESPN+.

The Raiders took sets one and two by wide margins (25-13 and 25-16) before Youngstown State (6-9, 1-3 Horizon) battled in the third set, with Wright State wrapping things up with a 25-23 set win.

On Tuesday, the Raiders saw eight different players record kills, each finishing with at least three kills, paced by an eight-kill night from Reilly Zegunis. Megan Alders tallied seven kills and Callie Martin had six of her own. Zegunis and Alders also made their presence known at the net, with Zegunis recording four blocks and both Alders and Aaliyah Byers tallying three blocks. Wright State recorded nine service aces in the sweep, led by three service aces from Andrea Bortulin and two each from Jenny Wessling and Lauren Yacobucci. Yacobucci passed out 30 of the Raiders' 37 assists while Wessling collected 17 digs, both match-highs.

SET ONE
Back-and-forth early in the set, the match was a one-point contest with Wright State leading 10-9 and later by three at 16-13. From there, the Raiders closed the set in commanding fashion, tallying the next nine straight points thanks to kills from three kills each from Alders and Zegunis.

SET TWO
The Raiders opened set two like they closed the opening set, tallying the first six points and 11 of the first 15 set points overall before a 7-2 run behind kills from Byers, Martin and Camryn Hausler, along with back-to-back service aces from Wessling, pushed the margin to 18-7. Youngstown State attempted to pull back into things before the Raiders closed the set with back-to-back kills from Hausler.

SET THREE
The most competitive set of the night, each side had small runs but could never pull away, with the set tied at six-, 14- and 20-all before Wright State rolled off three straight points to take a 23-20 lead. Youngstown State answered with three straight points of their own for another tied score before the Raiders were able to wrap things up, first with a Yacobucci kill and then a YSU attacking error to close the night.
