MILWAUKEE – The Wright State women's basketball team battled back all night long to dig out of a first quarter hole and force overtime, but the Raiders came up just short and fell 93-87 on Friday night at Milwaukee in Horizon League action.
Wright State (12-9, 6-4 Horizon) was outscored by 16 in the opening 10 minutes before responding with a 27-point second quarter to trail by just three at the half. The Raiders continued to chip away at the Milwaukee (12-10, 6-5 Horizon) advantage in the second half and tied the game for the first time since the opening with just under six minutes to play on a
Rachel Loobie jumper. Both sides went back and forth down the stretch, with a pair of Milwaukee free throws tying the game at 79-all with 63 seconds to play. The Raiders had three chances in the closing moments, including an
Alexis Hutchison jumper at the horn, but it hit rim and sent the game to the extra session.
In overtime, Wright State scored the first basket but Milwaukee tallied the next eight points to push the margin to six and the hosts held on over the final two minutes.
Hutchison finished with a game-high 34 points to lead four Raiders in double figures, while
Kacee Baumhower and Loobie each notched 17 points, with Loobie just missing a double-double after pulling down nine rebounds.
Lauren Scott was the final Wright State player in double figures with 15 points of her own, while
Claire Henson's four points off the bench was the only other scoring production for the Raiders.
Wright State finished the night shooting 45 percent (34-of-76) but connected on just five of its 21 three-point attempts (24 percent), only the fourth time this season the Raiders have been held to five or fewer triples. The Raiders collected 50 points from inside the paint and had 17 points off 15 Milwaukee turnovers. Milwaukee connected at 48 percent (32-of-67) overall and was 9-of-23 (39 percent) from three-point range.
The hosts got 28 points from their bench, including a double-double from Grace Crowley, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds as one of five Milwaukee players with double figure scoring nights in the win.
Wright State is back in action on Sunday as the Raiders take on Green Bay in a 2 p.m. ET tipoff to close the Wisconsin road trip. Fans can follow the action on ESPN+ and via live stats.
