MILWAUKEE – The Wright State volleyball team saw
Reilly Zegunis and
Taylor Bransfield turn in season-best efforts on Saturday afternoon as the Raiders defeated Milwaukee in five sets to remain atop the Horizon League standings.
Wright State (16-4, 8-1 Horizon) takes a one-match lead in the HL standings into the second half of the League schedule, which begins for the Raiders next Friday night at home against Green Bay, while Milwaukee (12-9, 7-2 Horizon) remains a match back in the standings. Green Bay is currently 6-3 in the HL and currently holds the No. 3 spot in the standings.
Saturday against Milwaukee, the Raiders dropped the opening set, 25-13, before responding with back-to-back 25-13 set wins to take control, only to see the hosts notch a 25-15 fourth set win and force a fifth set for the second-straight contest. In the deciding set, the Raiders found themselves down 11-9 in the race to 15 points before answering with four consecutive points to take the lead and grab the match moments later on Zegunis' final kill of the night.
Zegunis finished the win with a season-high 19 kills, adding four blocks and three digs, while Bransfield had a season-best of her own with 18 kills, followed by eight kills from
Mya Ayro and seven from
Sam Ott as eight Raiders notched a kill. Wright State collected nine service aces as a group, including five from
Lauren Yacobucci, who finished with a double-double effort as she passed out 54 of the Raiders' 59 assists and added 14 digs.
Five different Raiders turned in double-digit dig afternoons, paced by
Jenny Wessling's 24 digs, as
Jenny Morey and
Katie Sowko each notched 18 digs to go along with the 16 from Ott and 14 from Yacobucci. The Raiders finished the afternoon hitting .153 as a group with 29 errors, their lowest hitting percentage in a victory since a .057 mark in a five-set win over Wichita State in September 2022.
