LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Graduate forward
Amaya Staton recorded her second double-double on the season, the ninth in her career, as the Wright State women's basketball team slipped to Bellarmine 79-71 on Thursday night.
The Raiders will return to the Nutter Center on Sunday, November 24 to host Ohio for a 7:00 p.m. matchup. The game will stream on ESPN+ and have live stats provided. Fans are encouraged to bring nonperishable goods to donate to the Raider Food Pantry.
Wright State (1-4) finished the night shooting 47.1 percent overall from the floor, 36 percent for three, and going 14-of-19 on the line.
The Raiders were led by Staton's double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. The graduate guard went four-of-five overall from the floor and seven-for-seven on the line. Joining in the double-figure stats were
Makiya Miller with 12 points,
Macie Taylor with 10 points, and
Claire Henson with 10 rebounds.
Wright State ended the night with nine three-pointers, led by
Rylee Sagester with three, followed by Miller with two. Henson led the team in assists, recording five on the night, closely trailed by
Olivia Brown and Taylor with four each.
The Raiders opened with strong offense, shooting 64.3 percent overall from the floor while going four-of-eight behind the arc, holding as high as a 14-point advantage in just the first quarter. Miller was leading the team after the first 10 minutes, recording eight points with two threes and a driving layup. The Raider defense held Bellarmine to just four field goals and two shots on the line, giving WSU a 24-13 lead after the first.
Wright State maintained the advantage, holding a 43-30 lead at the half. Sagester and Staton each recorded six points in the second quarter, as Sagester went two-of-three behind the arc, and Staton one-of-two for field goals and four-for-four on the line. Staton led the team in rebounds at the half (7), grabbing six in the second quarter.
Bellarmine lowered the Raider's lead to single-digits in the third quarter, putting up nine field goals while allowing only five from Wright State. The Knights run continued into the fourth, opening with an 11-1 run by the media timeout. Bellarmine took the advantage, going on a ten-to-nothing run with less than five minutes remaining.
The Raiders held Bellarmine (4-2) to shooting 41.2 percent overall. The Knights were led by Hope Sivori with 17 points, six rebounds, six assists, and four steals, going six-for-six on the line. Four more Knights saw double-digit scoring – Hana Abdel Aal (11 points), Ashlee Harris (13 points), Hayley Harrison (13 points), and Erin Toller (14 points).
