DAYTON – Three players finished with double-digit scoring nights as
Jack Doumbia and
Brandon Noel tallied double-doubles but it wasn't enough as the Wright State men's basketball team fell 80-70 at home inside the Nutter Center to Youngstown State on Wednesday night.
Wright State (7-6, 1-2 Horizon) now gets ready for a quick turnaround, traveling to take on Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon before the holiday break. Saturday's contest is set for a 2 p.m. tipoff and fans can follow the action on ESPN+, via live stats or by listening to the Wright State Radio Network, where Chris Collins and Jim Brown will have all the action on the radio.
On Wednesday, Wright State took a five-point lead into the halftime break before Youngstown State (7-5, 3-0 Horizon) jumped out of the locker room with the first seven points to kick off a back-and-forth final 20 minutes. Doumbia snapped the early second half Youngstown State run with a jumper to knot the score at 42-all with 18 minutes to play, the first of seven tied scores in the second stanza that saw seven lead changes and the margin no more than four points until the closing moments.
The Raiders tallied six straight points as part of a 9-2 run to take a three-point lead at 65-62 with 4:42 to play, but that turned out to be their final lead of the night, with Youngstown State responding with the next 10 points to push the margin to seven in the final two minutes.
Doumbia finished with a game-best 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season, while Noel notched 10 points and 10 rebounds of his own for his fourth double-double of the campaign and
Alex Huibregtse tallied 15 points as the third Raider in double figures.
Solomon Callaghan just missed double figures himself, chipping in nine points off the bench, while
Logan Woods logged eight points and
Keaton Norris added seen points and four assists.
Wright State finished the night shooting 47 percent overall (26-of-55) while going 10-of-28 (42 percent) from deep, although seven of its three-pointers came in the first half. Youngstown State ended the game at a 44 percent shooting mark (28-of-63) as the visitors connected on 10 three-pointers of their own (10-of-30, 33 percent).
The Raiders finished with a 38-33 advantage on the glass, grabbing 31 of their 38 rebounds on the defensive end, but Youngstown State finished with a 32-20 edge in paint points and had 15 second chance points.
Four Youngstown State players turned in double figure scoring nights, led by Ty Harper's 16 points, while Jason Nelson added 15 points and both Cris Carroll and Gabe Dynes finished with 10 points.
