Women’s Basketball Readies to Open HL Play at Detroit Mercy

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program will open Horizon League conference play at Detroit Mercy on Wednesday, December 4. The game is set for a 7 p.m. tip off and will stream on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
The Raiders moved to 2-5 on the season, falling to Findlay 65-64 on Tuesday night. Wright State ended the night shooting 41.5 percent overall from the floor, going 11-of-29 for three. Leading the team in scoring was Macie Taylor with 24 points, shooting 53.3 percent overall. The redshirt-sophomore guard also led in minutes (32), three-pointers (3-7), and free throws (5-6).
Joining in the double-figure scoring was Amaya Staton, tallying ten points on the night. Staton led the team in rebounds – snagging five defensively and three on offense – and blocks (2). Closely following Staton in rebounds was Henson, recording seven, and Chloe Chard Peloquin with five. Henson and Taylor combined for eight of WSU's 13 assists – four each – while Brown and Makiya Miller each had two.
SCOUTING THE TITANS
Under direction of third-season head coach Kate Achter, Detroit Mercy is 4-1 on the season, defeating Bowling Green (73-66), Bellarmine (73-71), Western Michigan (72-63), and Eastern Michigan (72-61), falling only to Michigan State (101-44).
Last season, the Titans finished 17-16 overall, going 9-11 in HL play. UDM entered post-season play sitting sixth in the HL, taking down RMU in the first round before falling to Purdue Fort Wayne in the Quarterfinals.
Leading the Titans is fifth year guard Aaliyah McQueen, averaging 14.6 points per game with 73 on the season, while averaging 7.2 rebounds per game. McQueen leads the team in three-pointers, shooting 42.3 percent from behind the arc with 11 threes on the season. Sophomore guard Makayla Jackson leads the team in field goal percentage (51.7) and blocks (3). Junior guard Myonna Hooper was the first player to receive HL weekly honors this season, being named Player of the Week on November 11. Hooper leads the team with 16 assists.
HISTORY VS. DETROIT MERCY
The Raiders lead the all-time series 38-28, which includes 14-straight victories over Detroit. WSU won twice against the Titans by an average margin of eight points last year.
STATON HAS 'EM SEEING DOUBLE
Amaya Staton is no stranger to dual-figure stats, putting up a double-double for three consecutive games (Nov. 15-24). The graduate forward leads the Horizon League and ranks in the top 30 nationally for double-doubles. Staton's first double-double came at home on November 15, tallying 12 points and 13 rebounds against Tennessee State; then at Bellarmine on November 21, grabbing 11 rebounds and leading the team with 15 points, and recently against Ohio with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Lorain, Ohio native is the first Raider to see three-consecutive double-doubles since Lexi Smith in the 2016-17 season; and as of November 25, Staton is one of just 11 other NCAA Division I women's basketball players to do so in the 2024-25 season.
PRESEASON POLL
The Raiders finished sixth in the 2024 Horizon League preseason poll with 58 points, which the league's 11 head coaches voted on. Cleveland State (117 points) was selected to win the conference after receiving all seven first-place votes, closely followed by Green Bay (114 points) with four first-place votes.
TALK ABOUT A FOURTH QUARTER!
In a 77-65 victory over Tennessee State on Nov. 15, Claire Henson logged a career high 22 points. Of her 22 points on the day, 14 were scored in the final ten minutes. In the eventful final period, the junior guard went three-for-three from the floor and eight-of-nine on the line, accounting for two-thirds of the Raiders 21 points in the quarter.
CAREER HIGH SEASON OPENER
The Raiders opened the 2024-45 season at Wisconsin, as Claire Henson and Makiya Miller each saw career-highs with double-digit points in the 95-68 final. Miller ended the night with a career high 22 points, marking eight double-figure scoring games in her collegiate career. Miller matched a career high of six rebounds, previously recorded at Michigan State (01/13/23) and Ohio Christian (11/17/22). Joining Miller in double-figures was Henson, tallying 12 points, another Raider career high. Chloe Chard Peloquin matched a career best of seven rebounds in her Wright State debut, recording five points.
NONCONFERENCE TESTS
WSU will close its non-conference slate with games against Grand Canyon (December 18), Georgia Southern (December 19), and Florida Atlantic (December 21) at the GCU Classic.
HORIZON LEAGUE SLATE
Each Horizon League team will play a 20-game double round-robin schedule. Wright State's conference schedule gets underway at Detroit Mercy on December 4 and concludes in the Nutter Center on March 1 versus Robert Morris.
