Women’s Basketball Stays in Michigan to take on Oakland

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program will continue Horizon League conference play at Oakland on Friday, December 6. The game is set for a 7 p.m. tip off and will stream on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
The Raiders moved to 2-6 on the season and 0-1 in the Horizon League, falling to Detroit Mercy 67-56 on Wednesday night. Wright State (2-6, 0-1 HL) ended the night shooting 37.3 percent overall from the floor. Amaya Staton led the team in scoring with 15 points on the night, going six-of-eight overall and shooting 75 percent on the line. Joining in the double-figure scoring was Macie Taylor with 13 points, shooting 50 percent from the floor.
Makiya Miller and Claire Henson combined for 14 points – seven each – as Henson led the team with nine rebounds. Staton closely trailed, grabbing eight off the backboard. Wright State ended the night with nine blocks, a season high, led by Chloe Chard Peloquin's career high of five block. For the fourth consecutive game, Staton tallied two blocks on the night.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Under direction of 12th-season head coach Jeff Tungate, Oakland is 2-6 on the season, defeating Cleary 95-51 and Central Michigan 76-65. The Golden Grizzlies have fallen to Michigan State, Army, Michigan, St. Thomas (Minn.), Richmond, and Old Dominion.
The Golden Grizzlies finished the 2023-24 season with a 12-17 overall record, going 8-12 in conference. Oakland competed in the first round of the HL tournament, entering as the No. 8 seed, falling to No. 9 Northern Kentucky.
Junior guard Maddy Skorupski leads the team in scoring, tallying 126 points on the season, averaging 15.8 points per game. Macy Smith leads the team in threes with 17 on the season. Madison Royal-Davis is Oakland's top rebounder, averaging 4.8 rebounds per game. The Golden Grizzlies are shooting 38.6 percent overall from the floor, 27.4 percent for three, and 64.9 percent on the line.

The Raiders hold a 21-7 all-time record over the Golden Grizzlies, as the two went 1-1 last season, each winning at home.
STATON HAS 'EM SEEING DOUBLE
Amaya Staton is no stranger to dual-figure stats, putting up a double-double for three consecutive games (Nov. 15-24). The graduate forward leads the Horizon League and ranks in the top 30 nationally for double-doubles. Staton's first double-double came at home on November 15, tallying 12 points and 13 rebounds against Tennessee State; then at Bellarmine on November 21, grabbing 11 rebounds and leading the team with 15 points, and recently against Ohio with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Lorain, Ohio native is the first Raider to see three-consecutive double-doubles since Lexi Smith in the 2016-17 season; and as of November 25, Staton is one of just 11 other NCAA Division I women's basketball players to do so in the 2024-25 season.
PRESEASON POLL
The Raiders finished sixth in the 2024 Horizon League preseason poll with 58 points, which the league's 11 head coaches voted on. Cleveland State (117 points) was selected to win the conference after receiving all seven first-place votes, closely followed by Green Bay (114 points) with four first-place votes.
TALK ABOUT A FOURTH QUARTER!
In a 77-65 victory over Tennessee State on Nov. 15, Claire Henson logged a career high 22 points. Of her 22 points on the day, 14 were scored in the final ten minutes. In the eventful final period, the junior guard went three-for-three from the floor and eight-of-nine on the line, accounting for two-thirds of the Raiders 21 points in the quarter.
CAREER HIGH SEASON OPENER
The Raiders opened the 2024-45 season at Wisconsin, as Claire Henson and Makiya Miller each saw career-highs with double-digit points in the 95-68 final. Miller ended the night with a career high 22 points, marking eight double-figure scoring games in her collegiate career. Miller matched a career high of six rebounds, previously recorded at Michigan State (01/13/23) and Ohio Christian (11/17/22). Joining Miller in double-figures was Henson, tallying 12 points, another Raider career high. Chloe Chard Peloquin matched a career best of seven rebounds in her Wright State debut, recording five points.
NONCONFERENCE TESTS
WSU will close its non-conference slate with games against Grand Canyon (December 18), Georgia Southern (December 19), and Florida Atlantic (December 21) at the GCU Classic.
HORIZON LEAGUE SLATE
Each Horizon League team will play a 20-game double round-robin schedule. Wright State's conference schedule gets underway at Detroit Mercy on December 4 and concludes in the Nutter Center on March 1 versus Robert Morris.
