Raiders take game one against PFW with Smith grand slam

FORT WAYNE, IN – The Wright State baseball team defeated Purdue Fort Wayne 16-13 on Friday afternoon. The win comes thanks to a grand slam to left center by Boston Smith in the top of the seventh. The Raiders are now 12-9 overall and 3-1 in the Horizon league, and will continue the three-game series at PFW on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Wright State finished with 16 runs on 13 hits with six walks. Nate Manley led the team with three hits, followed by Drew Baker, Jay Luikart, and Smith with two each. Carson Clark, Patrick Fultz, Dane Thomas, and Ben Vore each recorded one hit on the day. Luikart and Manley both had an extra-base hit, with one double each.
 
The Raiders opened the day with two runs on a Luikart double, sending Vore and Thomas to score. The lead was not long lived as the Mastodons put six runs on the board in the bottom of the second. Wright State tied the score at six in the fourth, starting with Baker reaching on a throwing error, followed by a double by Manley advancing Fultz and Smith to score. Thomas grounded out allowed Manley to cross home plate.
 
PFW followed taking a ten-to-six lead in the fifth, but the Raiders were quick to lower the lead to three in the sixth as Fultz scored on Clark being caught stealing. Wright State took the lead in the seventh, with Thomas scoring on a throwing error and Baker with an RBI walk, making it a one run game. With the bases loaded, Smith homered to left center, for a 13-10 lead against the 'Dons. Fultz followed scoring on a throwing error. The Raiders raised the lead to six with a single by Thomas and a sacrifice fly from Vore. PFW added three runs in the ninth, ending the game 16-13.
 
Duke Benge (2-1) was awarded the win after entering in the fifth to pitch three innings, allowing no runs or hits with no walks and one strikeout. Garrett Peters earned the win after pitching the final third of an inning, preventing the 'Dons from tying the game, leaving three on base after recording his one strikeout. Starting pitcher Josh Laisure recorded a team leading four strikeouts while allowing six runs on seven hits with three walks.
 
Owen Willard (0-3) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on two hits with two walks in his third of an inning on the mound. PFW finished the day with 13 runs on 21 hits with six walks against their eight strikeouts. They were led by Camden Karczewski and Justin Osterhouse with four hits each.
