Home run heavy third inning sets Raiders up for game-two win against MKE

MILWAUKEE, WI – The Wright State baseball team defeated Milwaukee 16-8 on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders are now 21-17 overall and 11-6 in the Horizon League. The rubber match will start at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 21. Fans can keep up with the action through ESPN+ live streaming, MKE audio broadcast, or live stats.

The Raiders finished with 16 runs on ten hits with 15 walks against their 12 strikeouts. They were led by Sammy Sass and Ben Vore, both recording two hits. Drew Baker, Patrick Fultz, Julian Greenwell, Gus Gregory, Andrew Patrick, and Boston Smith each added one hit on the day. Making up seven extra-base hits on the day, the Raiders recorded two doubles, one each from Fultz and Patrick, and five home runs, one each from Baker, Greenwell, Sass, Smith, and Vore. Of their 15 walks, Greenwell and Patrick reached base three times on balls, Luikart two times, and Luke Arnold, Baker, Fultz, Harrison Parker, Sass, Smith, and Vore once.
 
Wright State gained an early ten-to-nothing advantage, adding one run in the top of the second, and nine runs in the third. The lone second inning run came off a Fultz double to right center, sending Patrick to score after reaching base on balls. The third inning rally was made up of five Raider home runs, beginning with a two-RBI homer by Sass, allowing Greenwell to score. After Luikart was walked, Vore followed with another two-run homer to right center. Smith continued the team's out of the park hits with a solo home run to center field. Patrick reached base on balls for Baker to record the third two-RBI home run. The final homer was hit by Greenwell after Gregory reached base on a single, taking an early ten-run lead in the third.
 
The Panthers lowered Wright State's advantage with to six in the bottom of the third, adding a sacrifice fly and three-RBI double, 10-4. The Raiders added one run in the fourth with a Patrick double sending Smith to score, 11-4.
 
The sixth inning brought Wright State to an 11-run lead, with RBI walks by Baker, Fultz, and Greenwell, and a sacrifice fly by Sass allowing Baker to score, 15-4. Milwaukee lowered the lead to ten with one run in the bottom of the sixth. Fultz grounding out to second allowed Harrison to score, regaining the 11-run lead in the top of the seventh. Preventing a run-ruled seven inning game, Milwaukee added three runs in the bottom of the seventh, with an RBI single and two-RBI double, 16-8. Both teams put up good defense, with no runs being scored in the final two innings.
 
Garret Simpson (3-1) earned the win after pitching the first six innings, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and three batters struck out. Warren Hartzell entered to pitch for the eighth, striking out two batters with no runs, hits, or walks in his two innings on the mound.
 
Panthers starting pitcher Adrian Montilva (1-3) was charged with the loss after allowing nine runs on six hits with four walks and five batters struck out in two and two third innings. Milwaukee finished with eight runs on nine hits with four walks against their five strikeouts. They were led by Carson Hansen's five RBI on three hits, including three doubles.
