Freshmen pitching staff brings in series sweep against PFW

DAYTON - The Wright State baseball team defeated Purdue Fort Wayne 2-1 on Sunday afternoon, taking the series sweep. The Raiders are now 25-18 on the season and 14-7 in the Horizon League.

Wright State finished with two runs on their 11 hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Julian Greenwell, Gus Gregory, and Ben Vore each recorded two hits, while Luke Arnold, Jay Luikart, Andrew Patrick, Sammy Sass, and Boston Smith all had one hit on the day. Â Arnold and Patrick each reached base once on walks, with Fultz and Luikart each reaching on a hit by pitch once. Making up the team's two stolen bases were Gregory and Vore. Smith led the team with the only scoring hit, that being a home run.

Wright State added four hits in the first three innings, with a single by Greenwell in the first, a Vore single in the second, and singles by Arnold and Greenwell in the third. The Mastodons gained an early lead in the low-scoring game, scoring on a ground out in the top of the third. The following three innings saw four more Raider hits, with a Vore single in the fourth, Arnold single in the fifth, and singles by Sass and Luikart in the sixth.

Wright State took the lead in the bottom of the seventh, as Patrick reached on a first-pitch single to the pitcher. Smith entered to pinch hit, recording a two-RBI homer to left field, giving Wright State the 2-1 lead. The 'Dons added a hit in both the eighth and ninth inning, but were unable to score, ending the series finale 2-1 for the Raiders.

Cam Allen (1-1) earned his first collegiate win, entering to pitch from the fifth to eighth innings, allowing no runs with only one hit and one walk, striking out three batters. Starting pitcher Chet Lax put in four innings of work, allowing only one run on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Brayden Schoetzow (S, 3) was awarded the save after closing the game, allowing only one hit in the final inning.

Fine finished the day allowing two runs on ten hits with two walks and four batters struck out in six and one third innings. The 'Dons finished with one run on seven hits with two walks against their five strikeouts. The lone RBI was recorded by Jackson Micheels, as his ground out to first allowed Nick Sutherlin to score.
