Raidergang alum Tyler Black called up to Milwaukee Brewers

MILWAUKEE/DAYTON – Wright State baseball alum Tyler Black (2019-2021) has been called up to the Milwaukee Brewers, the organization announced on Tuesday, April 30.

Black is now the third Raider on an active Major League Baseball roster, joining Golden Glove catcher Sean Murphy of the Atlanta Braves, and Jesse Scholtens, who made his Major League debut with the Chicago White Sox in September 2023. The promotion marks the second time that three Wright State alums have been played in the MLB simultaneously.

Last fall, Black was named the Brewers' co-player of the year by the organization. In addition to being named the Brewers' No. 4 prospect by ESPN MLB Insider Kiley McDaniel, The Athletic's Keith Law named Black the No. 44 overall prospect in baseball earlier this year.

From Keith Law:
"Black is the sort of player you love if he's on your team and hate if he's in the other dugout, as he plays hard all the time, and will fight for every out and every ball or strike until the game ends," … "he'll be a favorite of hometown fans once they see how he plays."

In his four seasons in the minor leagues, the left-handed batter has played in 238 games, accumulating 244 hits with 43 doubles, 19 triples, and 28 home runs, tallying 134 RBI. Black has made waves in 2024 playing for the AAA Nashville Sounds, as he bats .303 with 30 hits on the season, including five homers.

The Wright State infielder was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 33rd overall pick in the competitive round A on Sunday, July 11, 2021. To date, Black is the highest selected Raider position player in program history, surpassing former standout Keith Gordon, who was taken 47th overall in the second round of the 1990 Draft by the Cincinnati Reds. He is the second highest selection overall, bettered only by Wright State Hall of Famer Brian Anderson as the highest drafted player in Raider history.

The Toronto, Canada native spent three seasons at Wright State starting 104 of his 113 games, tallying a career .353 batting average with 104 total runs driven in, 26 doubles, 21 home runs and seven triples. In his senior season, Black hit .383 with 21 multi-hit games, including a career-best five hits against Purdue Fort Wayne in May 2021, along with 59 RBI and double-digit totals in both doubles (14) and homers (13).

In his final season in a Wright State uniform, Black was a first team All-Horizon League performer, and was named an All-American by ABCA/Rawlings, D1 Baseball and Perfect Game/Rawlings (third team) while earning a spot on the All-Knoxville Regional Team after his play in the NCAA Championship. Black was named the No. 7 hitter in the country by D1 Baseball in its analytical breakdown rankings of its Top 100 Hitters. In his first season at Wright State, Black was named the Horizon League's Freshman of the Year while earning a spot on the Horizon first team and all-freshmen teams.
