ATHENS, OH – The Wright State volleyball team opened its 2024 campaign with a three-set sweep over Appalachian State on Friday night as three Raiders finished with double-digit kills, paced by Mya Ayro's match-high 12 kills in her Wright State debut.
 
Wright State (1-0) continues action at the Bobcat Invitational with a pair of matches tomorrow, first taking on Xavier at 10:30 a.m. before wrapping up the weekend against host Ohio in a 7 p.m. start. Both Saturday matches are expected to be streamed on ESPN+.

On Friday, the Raiders scored 13 of the first 17 points in the opening set (25-18) and never looked back before battling through a tight second set (26-24) and controlling the final set (25-13). Wright State hit .310 as a group in the opening set and tallying a .370 final set hitting percentage to finish the win with a .289 overall hitting mark, while Appalachian State (0-1) never hit higher than .146 in any of the three sets on the way to an overall .117 hitting mark.
 
Ayro led the way with her 12 kills, tallying five in the opening set, while Sam Ott finished with 11 kills and Reilly Zegunis added 10 kills to the Raider attack that saw seven different players record multiple kills. Lauren Yacobucci passed out 41 of Wright State's 46 assists while adding eight digs and a pair of kills, while Jenny Morey (11 digs) and Jenny Wessling (10 digs) each added double-digit digs on the defensive side.
 
SET ONE
Back-and-forth and tied at four early, the Raiders rolled off nine straight points and went on a 13-2 run overall to cruise to the opening set victory. Ayro had four of her five first set kills during the scoring run that was aided by five Appalachian State errors.
 
SET TWO
The two sides traded points for the majority of the set before each went on mini runs down the stretch. The Raiders used back-to-back Ott kills to take a 22-19 lead, only to be answered by a 5-1 Appalachian State run. Wright State fought off three straight set points to grab the win from there, beginning with an App State errors before a final Ott kill closed the set.
 
SET THREE
Wright State tallied six of the first eight points behind a pair of kills by Zegunis, along with kills from Yacobucci and Elena Dubuc, before Appalachian State dug back into the set and pulled within four at 14-10. From there, the Raiders recorded 11 of the final 14 points, using three more Dubuc kills and a service ace from Audrey Hudson (the first of her collegiate career) to get to the finish line. Ott brought the contest to match point with her final kill of the night before Ayro wrapped things up with the final kill to close out the sweep.
