Volleyball closes weekend with four-setter against Bowling Green

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team took the opening set on Sunday afternoon, but was unable to keep the momentum in a four-set loss to Bowling Green inside McLin Gymnasium to close out play in the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational.

Wright State (4-2) now turns its attention to next weekend's tournament action at the Sports Imports Classic, hosted by Ohio State, and matches Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons in Columbus.

On Sunday, the Raiders took the opening set by a 25-21 score before falling in three straight close sets – 25-23, 25-22 and 25-20 – to Bowling Green (3-3). Wright State used 11 service aces and nine blocks to help keep pace on an afternoon where it finished hitting just .118 as a group.

Sam Ott tallied a match-high 13 points while adding five digs, two blocks and two aces to fill her stat line, with Mya Ayro notching 11 kills of her own to go along with a team-best five blocks. Taylor Bransfield turned in an eight-kill effort for the second time this weekend, adding three blocks. Lauren Yacobucci passed out 38 of the Raiders' 46 assists and collected 14 digs for another double-double while also adding three aces, with Jenny Wessling recording three aces of her own to go along with 20 digs.

SET ONE
Bowling Green scored the first three points of the afternoon and later led 11-7 before the Raiders chipped away, running off four straight points thanks in part to two Jenny Morey aces to knot the score at 14. From there, both sides traded mini scoring runs, with Bowling Green taking a 21-20 advantage on back-to-back points. Wright State responded by scoring the final five points to take the set behind a pair of Bransfield kills.

SET TWO
Bowling Green again took the early advantage and led 8-4 before Wright State pulled back into the set and eventually tied things up at 13 after kills from Ott and Zegunis. Back-to-back Ott kills gave the Raiders an 18-16 advantage, but Bowling Green responded with five straight points to grab a 21-18 margin. A 3-1 scoring run got the visitors to set point, where the Raiders held off momentarily with a Ayro kill and Bowling Green error, but Bowling Green closed the set with a final kill.

SET THREE

Wright State came out hot, tallying six of the first seven points behind three kills from Ayro, a kill from Zegunis and a Yacabucci ace, and later extended the advantage to 17-9. Bowling Green rolled off seven straight points to pull back into the set, later closing with a 4-1 run to win the set and take all momentum into the fourth set.

SET FOUR
Bowling Green recorded four of the first five points and played from ahead the majority of the set. The Raiders momentarily tied the set at six-all after a kill from Elena Dubuc and a Wessling ace, but Wright State would never tie or lead the set from that point on. The Raiders used a late, three-point flurry thanks in part to a Zegunis kill and a Yacobucci ace to pull to 23-20, but Bowling Green ended the afternoon with the next two points.
