DAYTON – The Wright State women's basketball team defeated Detroit Mercy 67-64 on Wednesday evening, adding their first Horizon League win of the 2024-25 season.
Wright State (3-14, 1-6 HL) ended the night shooting 41.9 percent overall from the floor, 42.1 from three, and went seven-of-eight on the line.
Three Raiders saw double-figure scoring, as
Claire Henson and
Rylee Sagester led the team with 15 points each, followed by
Amaya Staton with 11 points, while
Macie Taylor and Laruen Scott each added nine points for the Raiders.
Abbie Riddle led the team with a career high three assists, followed by Henson, Sagester, and Taylor, all adding two.
Henson not only led the team in scoring, but in rebounding as she and Staton each grabbed eight off the backboard on the night. Taylor followed, recording five rebounds, matching her season high for the third time. Henson led the team in steals with three on the night, followed by
Makiya Miller and Riddle with two. Staton matched a season best of three blocks, while Riddle added her first of the season.
The game began close, with four tied scores and two lead changes, with neither team taking more than a three-point lead until a Staton layup gave WSU a 14-10 advantage with 3:20 left in the quarter. With less than two minutes remaining, the Raiders went on a 7-2 run, ending the first quarter 21-16. Sagester led the team with five points in the first, as the Raiders were shooting 56.3 percent from the floor, going three-of-four from behind the arc.
The Raiders held their largest lead of the half in the second quarter, holding a 36-25 advantage over the Titans after Scott put up back-to-back three-pointers with just over two minutes remaining. Sagester reached double-digit scoring by the half, adding seven points in the second quarter, shooting three-of-three from three on the night. Scott followed, recording six points in the second, going two-of-three from three.
The Titans outscored WSU 15-11 in the third, as Taylor led the team with six points and four rebounds in the quarter. UDM lowed the Raider's lead to six points in the third, going on an 8-0 run with under five minutes.
The fourth quarter stayed close with the score tying three times. The Raiders shot 43.8 percent overall in the final period, led by Henson going four-of-four from the floor and one-of-one on the line while grabbing four rebounds, all defensively. Staton followed, adding seven points and three rebounds for the Raiders. With less than a minute remaining, the Titans had a 6-0 run, lowering WSU's lead to one, 65-64, but with just four seconds on the clock, Riddle drew a foul to raise the lead to three, ending the night with a 67-64 win.
Detroit Mercy (10-4, 4-2 HL) finished shooting 37.5 percent overall, going 3-of-13 from three and 19-of-21 from the free throw line. They were led by Aaliyah McQueen with a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds. Kailey Starks followed, adding 13 points for the Titans.
