DAYTON – The Wright State men's basketball team took a one-point lead on Sam Alamutu's three-pointer with 54 seconds remaining on Saturday afternoon, but host Marshall responded with a three-pointer of its own to hand the Raiders a 76-74 loss in non-conference action.
Â
Wright State (5-6) now returns home for a Tuesday night matchup against regional foe Miami (OH) on Greene County Night inside the Nutter Center. Tuesday's contest is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff and fans can follow the action several ways – on ESPN+, via live stats or by tuning in to the Wright State Radio Network – 101.5 FM 'The Fridge' and WING 1410 AM. Chris Collins and Jim Brown will have all the play-by-play action on the radio and television feeds.
Â
Back-and-forth throughout on Saturday, neither team ever led by double digits, with the Raiders' largest advantage of nine points coming early in the second half. Marshall (7-4) never led by more than five in the contest.
Â
After Michael Cooper gave the game its 11th tie with his jumper at the 1:41 mark, Marshall took a two-point lead on a jumper to set up Alamutu's three-pointer with 54 seconds remaining to give the Raiders a 71-70 advantage. Out of a timeout, Marshall's Wyatt Fricks hit a straight on three-pointer to put the hosts on top for what turned out to be for good, as Marshall hit three free throws in the closing moments to seal the win.
Â
Cooper finished with a game-high 22 points, one point shy of his career mark set just last Sunday against Green Bay, to lead nine Raiders in the scoring column, while fellow freshman Kellen Pickett turned in a 10-point effort for his second double-digit scoring game of his young career. Solomon Callaghan finished with nine points on a trio of three-pointers, while Dominic Pangonis and Logan Woods both tallied seven points. TJ Burch and Alamutu each chipped in six points as both had big three-point baskets down the stretch.
Â
Wright State finished the night shooting just 39.7 percent overall but did connect on eight of its 12 three-pointers in the second half (41.4 percent from deep). The Raiders only went to the free throw line six times, four in the first half, hitting four of their attempts. Defensively the Raiders held Marshall to just 41 percent first half shooting before the hosts ended the contest shooting 49.1 percent overall with seven three-pointers (7-24, 29 percent), while Marshall was 13-of-16 at the free throw line, including 10 visits to the stripe in the second half.
Â
Fricks turned in 19 points to lead three Marshall players in double figures, with Noah Otshudi adding 18 points and Jalen Speer scoring 14 in the win.
