Three Raiders Reach Double Figures in OT Win Over Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Three Raiders scored in double figures as the Wright State women's basketball team earned a 78-76 overtime win on Thursday night. Wright State returns home on Wednesday, February 19, to face Oakland at 7 p.m. The game will stream on EPSN+.
 
Wright State (7-19, 5-11 HL) shot 37.9 percent from the field, 24.1 percent from three, and 70 percent (21-of-30) from the free-throw line. Amaya Staton recorded a season-best 23 points and matched her career high with 16 rebounds for a double-double, her tenth of the season. Joining in the double-figure scoring were Lauren Scott with 13 points and Macie Taylor with 10 points. Claire Henson added nine points for the Raiders, leading the team with six assists.
 
Henson added nine rebounds, while Olivia Brown chipped in five. The Raiders also tallied six steals and one block.
 
Wright State started the night off strong, holding a 20-13 lead after the first quarter after shooting 57.1 percent from the floor while holding YSU to shooting 5-of-14. Makiya Miller opened the scoring with a three-pointer. Henson followed with a turnaround jump shot in the paint, taking a 5-0 advantage two minutes in. The Raiders held their largest advantage of the period at the first quarter media, as Chard Peloquin put up a layup and two free throws, followed by a Taylor layup to make it 14-5 with under five minutes. YSU fought, coming out of the media timeout with a 6-0 run. Staton answered, going on a 6-2 run to end the quarter 20-13.
 
After Abbie Riddle opened the second period with a three, YSU went on a 13-3 run, tying the score at 26 with under five minutes remaining. YSU took a brief lead with a jumper from outside the paint, but Scott was quick to tie the game at 28 with a turnaround jumper. WSU continued, making it a 17-4 run to hold an 11-point advantage at the half. The run was made up of free throws by Staton and Scott, threes by Rylee Sagester and Scott, a layup each by Scott and Staton, and a jumper in the paint by Henson, ending the second quarter 43-32.
 
YSU outscored the Raiders 18-13 in the third, holding WSU to shooting 28.6 percent from the floor. At the media timeout, Youngstown State had lowered WSU's advantage to five, 45-40, as a layup by Henson was the Raider's only scoring play. The game stayed close, as the Raiders went four-of-seven on the line while Taylor led the team with a driving layup followed by a three-point jumper, ending the period 56-50.
 
Staton led the team in the final quarter, recording eight of the team's ten points, shooting two-of-five from the floor and going four-of-four on the line. The other two points came from Henson with an early-quarter layup. The Penguins shot 45.5 percent in the fourth, tallying 16 points to tie the score at 66 and send the game into overtime.
 
The Raiders tallied most of their points from free throws in overtime, shooting seven-of-ten on the line, adding only two field goals. The Penguins led briefly in overtime, but a Scott three-pointer put WSU ahead, followed by two Miller free throws for a three-point cushion. YSU put up a hook shot, but Staton drew a foul to shoot two-of-two, regaining the three-point advantage. After a Penguin layup, Taylor put in a tough driving layup, followed by a Scott free throw, giving the Raiders a four-point advantage. YSU hit a late three, but Wright State sealed the 78-76 win with a final free throw.
 
Youngstown State shot 47.6 percent overall, 33.3 percent from three, and 63.2 percent at the line. Jewel Watkins led the team in scoring, tallying 22 points. Joining in the double-figure statistics were Sophia Gregory with 11 rebounds and Faith Burch with 17 points.
