Gilkerson’s Three-Run Homer Not Enough in Series Finale at Auburn

AUBURN, Alabama – Redshirt freshman Cam Gilkerson recorded his first collegiate hit with a three-run homer as the Wright State baseball team fell to Auburn 9-4 in game three of the series on Sunday afternoon.

The Raiders (2-3) got on base every inning of the series finale, finishing with four runs on eight hits, seven walks, and seven strikeouts. Freshman infielder Braylen Blomquist led the team with a hit in all three of his at-bats, including one double, while Hunter Warren added two hits and a walk.

Auburn took an early lead, putting two on the board with a two-run home run in the first. The Tigers added to their lead with a groundout RBI in the third and another two-run homer in the fourth, making it 5-0. Wright State loaded the bases in the fifth, starting with a Blomquist double down the left-field line, followed by Gilkerson being hit by a pitch and Conlan Daniel walked. After a Tiger pitching change, Gus Gregory grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Blomquist to score, 5-1.

After the Raider pitching staff held Auburn scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, Blomquist and Warren both reached on singles in the sixth. With two on, Gilkerson delivered his first collegiate hit in style, launching a three-run homer to right field to bring the Raiders within one, 5-4. Wright State held Auburn scoreless in the sixth, but the Tigers put up back-to-back homers in the seventh, adding a three-run buffer, 7-4. Auburn extended its lead in the eighth with a two-run single to left field, making it 9-4.

Raider starting pitcher Chet Lax (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits with two walks. Lax struck out three and walked two over three innings.

Auburn ended the day with nine runs on 14 hits with three walks against their seven strikeouts. Ike Irish led the way for the Tigers with two hits and two RBI in his four at-bats. Jett Johnston (2-0) earned the win after allowing no runs on one hit with three walks in two innings of work. Auburn starting pitcher Christian Chatterson put in four and a third innings on the mound, allowing one run on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
