Staton Tallies Season-High 22 Points against IU Indy

DAYTON – Graduate forward Amaya Staton tallied a season-high 22 points as the Wright State women's basketball team fell to IU Indy 80-68 on Wednesday evening. The Raiders will be on the road, traveling to Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday, February 8. The game is set for a 4 p.m. tipoff and will stream on ESPN+.
 
Wright State (6-18, 4-10 HL) ended the night shooting 46.2 percent from the floor, going 3-of-12 from three. Staton led the team with her eighth double-double of the season, 15th career, recording 22 points and 11 rebounds. Joining in the double-figure scoring were Claire Henson and Makiya Miller with 13 points each. Leading the team in assists was Miller with four, followed by Olivia Brown with three.
 
Following Staton's 11 rebounds was Henson, grabbing six on the night. Miller led the team with three of the Raiders' seven steals, followed by Brown and Henson with two steals each.
 
WSU was shooting 37.5 percent overall after the first quarter, led by Henson shooting three-of-five from the floor with one three-pointer. Amaya Staton followed with five points, leading the team with five rebounds. The Jaguars held a 17-7 lead at the first quarter media timeout, raising it to a 12-point lead with four minutes remaining. The game stayed scoreless for two minutes, before the Raiders ended the period with a 7-0 run. The run began with a layup and three by Henson, followed by a jumper in the paint by Staton, 19-14.
 
The Raiders shot 57.1 percent from the floor in the second quarter, led by Miller with six points. Wright State opened the second period lowering IUI's lead to just one point with a 6-2 run, made up of two layups by Miller and one by Henson, 21-20. The Jags raised their advantage to five by the second quarter media timeout, 32-27. After the media, Miller made a driving layup, lowering the lead to three. IUI answered with a two-point jumper from outside of the paint, 34-29. Ellie Magestro-Kennedy took it to a two-point game with the Raider's second three of the night, 34-32, before the Jags ended the quarter with a 6-0 run.
 
IUI raised their lead to 15, 65-50, after the third quarter, outscoring the Raiders 25-18. Staton led the team, putting up 12 points in the third, shooting five-of-five from the floor with two points on the line. WSU continued, outscoring the Jaguars 18-15 in the fourth quarter while shooting 44.4 percent overall. Leading the final period was Miller with seven points, followed by Magestro-Kennedy with five points and Henson with four points.
 
IU Indy (6-17, 5-9 HL) ended the night shooting 54.2 percent overall, going 7-of-15 from three, and 9-of-13 on the free throw line. Katie Davidson led the Jaguars with 28 points, shooting 11-of-17 overall and three-of-three from beyond the arc. Joining in the double-figure scoring were Neveah Foster, 17 points, and Alexa Hocevar, 15 points. Hocevar and Faith Stinson led the team in rebounding, each grabbing seven off the backboard.
