Raiders' Late Effort Not Enough in Game 2 at Ole Miss

OXFORD, Mississippi – The Wright State baseball team faced an early deficit in game two at Ole Miss on Saturday evening, falling to the Rebels 8-3. The Raiders wrap up the series on Sunday, March 2, at 2:30 p.m. The game will stream on SEC Network+ with live stats available.

Wright State (3-5) recorded three runs on five hits, drawing eight walks while striking out 13 times. Patrick Fultz led the Raiders' offense, recording a single in the sixth and an RBI double in the eighth. Conlan Daniel had one hit– an RBI-double that first put WSU on the board in the seventh.

Will Cook and JP Peltier each added a hit for Wright State. Cook recorded the Raiders' first hit with a single up the middle in the second, while Peltier's hit came as a single to third in the sixth. Three Raiders—Luke Arnold, Daniel, and Peltier—reached base twice on balls, while Boston Smith and Hunter Warren were each walked once.

Ole Miss jumped out to an early lead, scoring seven runs across the first two innings. The Rebels started strong with a pair of two-run homers in the first, quickly making it 4-0. They continued with three scoring plays in the second, scoring on an error, a wild pitch, and on an RBI-single, 7-0. Wright State's defense held Ole Miss scoreless in the third and fourth, highlighted by Daniel's diving catch at the warning track to rob an extra-base hit in the fourth. The Rebels put up an RBI-single down the right field line in the fifth to make it 8-0.

Wright State's first run came in the top of the seventh, beginning as Arnold was walked, scoring on a double to left field by Daniel, 8-1. In similar fashion, Smith got on base on a walk, scoring on a Fultz double down the left field line, 8-2. Wright State added the final run in the ninth as Daniel walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Peltier walked, Smith reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, allowing Daniel to score, 8-3.

Starting pitcher Jarrett Heilman (0-2) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs on four hits. Heilman struck out two batters and walked two in one inning of work. Mychal Grogan entered in the second, putting in four innings on the mound. Grogan struck out four batters, walking none, while allowing two runs on five hits. Freshman lefty Caleb Ehling made his third appearance for the Raiders, pitching one and two-thirds innings, allowing no runs or hits while walking two and striking out one.

Ole Miss (9-1) finished with eight runs on nine hits with four walks against their nine strikeouts. Ryan Morerman and Judd Utermark led the Rebels with two hits and two RBI each, both putting up a homer in the first. Both of Moerman's hits went for extra bases, including a double to left-center in the fifth. Rebels starter Riley Maddox (2-1) earned the win after allowing no runs on two hits in five innings. Maddox struck out five batters and walked four.
