HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Kentucky – The Wright State baseball team closed out its three-game series at Northern Kentucky by splitting a Sunday doubleheader. After defeating NKU 19-5 in Friday's opener, the Raiders claimed a 9-6 win in Game 1 of the doubleheader before falling 7-4 in the series finale. The Game 1 victory marked Head Coach
Alex Sogard's 200th career win—all earned with the Raiders.
The Raiders, now 16-13 overall and 10-2 in the Horizon League, will be back in action with two midweek games in the Joe Nuxhall Classic, beginning with a matchup against Cincinnati on Tuesday, April 8, at 6 p.m.
GAME 1 | Wright State 9, Northern Kentucky 6
Though the weather stayed cold, the Raiders took little time to get hot, taking a 6-0 lead over the first four innings.
Hunter Warren got the Raiders on the board with an RBI double in the first, sending
Boston Smith to score. Warren came home on an errant throw as
Cam Gilkerson reached on an infield error. The bottom of the first was short lived, as
Cam Allen struck out all three batters looking.
Hunter Warren belted a three-run homer down the right field line to drive in Smith and
Will Cook. Smith added to the lead in the fourth with a solo shot to right.
The Norse tied the game at six in the sixth, first scoring on a two-run homer in the fifth before tacking on four runs in the sixth. The Raiders quickly responded in the seventh as
Luke Arnold doubled to right to drive in
JP Peltier. With
Braylen Blomquist and Arnold on base,
Dane Thomas drove in the final two runs of the day with a double down the right field line.
Garrett Peters earned his second win of the season, tossing 3.1 hitless innings with eight strikeouts. Starting pitcher
Cam Allen put in 5.0 innings of work, striking out a team season best of nine batters.
GAME 2 | Northern Kentucky 7, Wright State 4
The Norse were the first on the board in the series finale, scoring on an RBI-single in the third, but Wright State quickly gained the advantage in the fourth as Arnold launched a three-run home run to right. NKU reacted, tying the game at three in the bottom of the inning, following with an RBI double and RBI single
Wright State briefly took back the lead in the sixth as Manley scored on a failed pickoff attempt on Blomquist. But The Norse responded with a three-run homer in the seventh to take a 6-4 lead, before NKU capped scoring on the day with an RBI-double in the eighth.
Noah Williamson, now 1-1 on the season, took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits.
