Smith Tallies Three Homers in Doubleheader Wins Against YSU

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Wright State baseball team secured a series win over Youngstown State on Friday afternoon, winning 20–8 and 12–4, highlighted by a three-home run performance from catcher Boston Smith.

The Raiders will go for the sweep Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m.

Game 1 | Wright State 20, Youngstown State 8
Wright State opened the day with a 7–4 lead after three innings, as Gus Gregory drove in three runs in the first with a homer to right-center. YSU responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning. After a quick second inning, Braylen Blomquist reached base with a triple down the right-field line, followed by a walk from Smith. Blomquist was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Luke Arnold. Cam Gilkerson followed with a single through the left side, moving Smith into scoring position before Will Cook added the second Raider homer of the day, hitting it into right field. In similar fashion to the first, YSU responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning.

JP Peltier hit a home run to left field in the top of the fourth, taking a four-run lead. The Penguins tied the score at eight in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice on home runs.

Smith opened the fifth with his first homer of the day, regaining the lead 9-8. Gilkerson followed with a homer to left center. WSU put six on the board over the sixth and seventh, as Gregory scored on a bases-loaded groundout by Smith. Peltier was driven in on an Arnold sacrifice fly, and Blomquist on a Gilkerson single. Patrick Fultz opened the seventh with a single up the middle, moving to second on a Peltier single. Both were driven home as Smith hit his second homer into center field.

Wright State added one run in the eighth on a Hunter Warren RBI single driving in Gilkerson. The Raiders capped scoring with a three-run ninth, scoring on RBI singles by Gilkerson, Warren, and Fultz.

Game 2 | Wright State 12, Youngstown State 4
The Raiders took an early lead in game two of the doubleheader, putting seven on the board in the first three innings. The scoring began as Blomquist crossed the plate on a Gilkerson sacrifice fly in the second inning. The Raiders added six in the third, scoring three times on wild pitches, then on singles by Gregory and Gilkerson.

The Penguins cut the deficit to 7–5, scoring twice on homers, first in the third then in the fifth.

Warren took advantage of a wild pitch in the sixth to make it a five-run buffer. Peltier drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth, driving Gilkerson to score. Wright State reached double-digit runs when Warren scored on a passed ball. Smith capped his day with his third home run in the top of the ninth, hitting it off the scoreboard in right-center. WSU capped scoring with a Warren RBI single. The Penguins added a final run in the bottom of the ninth, drawing a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
