YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Wright State baseball team secured its seventh consecutive regular season Horizon League title with a 12-8 win at Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon.
The Raiders will return to Nischwitz Stadium for their final regular-season home series, hosting Northern Kentucky beginning Friday, May 9.
WSU struck first, plating two runs in the second inning as
Boston Smith recorded his fourth home run of the series. The Penguins responded quickly with a two-run homer of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Gus Gregory and
JP Peltier each added a home run in the third, putting the Raiders ahead 5-2. Following an hour-long rain delay,
Cam Gilkerson extended the lead in the fourth with a two-run homer to right center.
YSU added two runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, but the Raiders answered back with three runs across the fifth and sixth innings. Peltier opened the fifth by drawing a walk, then stole both second and third before Smith was intentionally walked.
Luke Arnold singled to right field, driving in Peltier. In the sixth, Gregory doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on another wild pitch to stretch the lead to five. Blomquist followed with a double, Smith was again intentionally walked, and Arnold was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gilkerson then brought home Blomquist with an RBI single to third.
The Penguins cut the deficit to three, drawing a bases-loaded walk in the seventh and scoring on a double and a fielder's choice in the eighth. WSU added two more runs in the ninth as Blomquist and Smith each drew bases-loaded walks. YSU added the final run of the day with a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the ninth.
