NASHVILLE- The top-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores used a three-run eighth inning to spoil a phenomenal Wright State effort in a 4-3 heartbreaking setback on the opening day of the NCAA Nashville Regional.
Cam Allen tossed six no-hit innings, striking out seven Commodores on Friday night. The right hander walked three and hit a batter but  Allen kept Vanderbilt off balance and didn't let a runner reach scoring position. He got tremendous help from his defense as
Conlan Daniel had two tremendous catches in left and right centerfield while
Cam Gilkerson made a leaping grab in foul territory down the right field line.
The Raiders took the lead just five pitches into the game. After a four-pitch walk to lead-off man
Hunter Warren,
Patrick Fultz kept his hot bat going, lacing a double off the left field wall, scoring Warren easily. Daniel's banner day continued in the second, powering a home run the opposite way over the right field wall, doubling the Raider lead. Two innings later,
Boston Smith parked his 24
th home run of the year, clearing the bleachers in right field to make it 3-0. That 24
th homer sets a new Horizon League single-season home run record.
Vanderbilt's lead wasn't gained without controversy. Riley Nelson hit a titanic shot down the right field line that was initially ruled foul on the field. The call was overturned on the field after an umpire conference and stood after review. That capped the three-run eighth and the Raiders couldn't get to Commodore closer Sawyer Hawks, who earned his eighth save of the season.
The Raiders now sit at 38-20 on the year and they will play an elimination game on Saturday afternoon against East Tennessee State. First pitch from Hawkins Field is set for 2 pm CT/ 3pm ET on the ESPN family of networks.
