ROCHESTER, MI- The Wright State baseball team clinched its fifth series win in Horizon League play Saturday afternoon in Michigan, defeating Oakland 6-1.
Â
Wright State (21-22, 14-3 HL) will go for the sweep of Oakland tomorrow afternoon. First pitch in Rochester is slated for 1 p.m.
Â
Griffen Paige got the start on the mound for Wright State and delivered the Raiders their second quality start of the weekend en route to his third win of the season. Paige pitched a gem, going seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out four Oakland batters.
Â
It was a pitcher's duel at Oakland Baseball Field with each team taking a shutout into the sixth inning. The Raiders would break the scoring open in the top of the sixth with back-to-back RBI hits from JP Peltier and Andrew Duncan. Peltier would get the party started with an RBI double that allowed Keegan Holmstrom to score from second base. Duncan would drive in Peltier a few pitches later with an RBI single through the left side.
Â
Wright State and Oakland exchanged single tallies in the seventh inning. Cam Gilkerson would score the Raiders' lone run of the inning, coming in to score on a fielder's choice. The Golden Grizzlies would respond in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot off the bat of Carter Hain.
Â
The Raiders would add two insurance runs in the top of the eighth, thanks to a bases-loaded two-run single off the bat of Zac Butler and one more run in the top of the ninth off another Duncan RBI single.
Â
Malachi Paplanus was the lone man out of the bullpen Saturday, pitching two shutout innings with one strikeout to secure the 6-1 win for the Raiders.
