BOWLING GREEN, KY – Katie Sowko finished with a match- and career-high 22 kills on Saturday afternoon, including eight in the deciding fifth set alone, as the Wright State volleyball team closed out the WKU Invitational with a victory over Loyola Chicago.
Wright State (2-1) won the opening set, 25-20, before rallying back to win a tight fourth set to force the deciding fifth set after Loyola Chicago (1-2) took sets two and three by scores of 25-10 and 25-22. The final set went back-and-forth and played all the way out to 23-21 before the Raiders grabbed the win over the Ramblers.
The Raiders are back in action next weekend with a pair of matches at the Ameritas Players Challenge, first taking on preseason No. 1 and host Nebraska on Friday night before taking on California on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday's match was nearly even across the board, with both Wright State and Loyola Chicago finishing the afternoon with 66 kills and 12 blocks, while the Ramblers had one additional assist (62-61) and hit .235 as a group while the Raiders turned in a .202 team hitting mark.
Sowko finished Saturday's win hitting .298 with her 22 kills, collecting 13 digs for her second-straight double double while adding four blocks, three assists and a pair of service aces.
Mya Ayro finished with 17 kills of her own and
Reilly Zegunis had 13 kills as the third Raider with double figure kills.
Lauren Yacobucci and
Fiona Cooper combined to pass out 49 of the Raiders' 61 assists, with Yacobucci dishing out 37 to go along with 15 digs for a double double of her own.
Elena Dubuc added eight kills and six blocks, while
Taylor Bransfield had seven blocks to go along with her four kills, while
Taygan Corstange collected 13 digs and
Ella Gaona added nine digs.
