Raiders open #HLVB play with Friday night sweep

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team opened Horizon League play with a three-set sweep over IU Indy on Friday night inside McLin Gymnasium, giving the Raiders a win in their Horizon League opening match for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.
 
Wright State (7-5, 1-0 Horizon League) looks to complete the weekend sweep tomorrow afternoon with a 2 p.m. start against IU Indy (6-7, 0-1 HL) back inside McLin Gymnasium.

Wright State took Friday's opening set 25-20 before a 25-22 second set and closed the night with a 25-21 set win. Back-and-forth all night, the Raiders closed strong in the first two sets, finishing the first set with six of the final eight points before tallying four of the final five second set points. Wright State notched a 7-1 scoring run midway through the third set to gain control and close out the sweep.
 
The Raiders hit .323 as a group in the win with 45 kills, while IU Indy connected at a .216 hitting mark with 34 kills. Wright State and IU Indy combined for 28 total attacking errors but recorded 23 service errors between the two sides.
 
Wright State was paced by Mya Ayro's match-high 13 kills while Reilly Zegunis added 12 kills and a pair of blocks with a service ace. Katie Sowko just missed double-digit kills of her own, finishing with nine as she filled her stat line with three digs, two blocks and a pair of service aces, with five kills each from Taylor Bransfield and Elena Dubuc. Lauren Yacobucci passed out 34 of the Raiders' 41 assists, adding seven digs, while Wright State got a match-best nine digs from Greta McKee and five digs from Taygan Corstange as nine different Raiders tallied a dig.
 
Jillian Tippmann finished with 12 kills to lead IU Indy, who also got 10 kills and eight digs from Maia Long as Grace Purichia passed out 31 assists and had eight assists of her own.
