ROCHESTER, MI – Solomon Callaghan's career-high 27 points led four Raiders with double figure scoring afternoons as the Wright State men's basketball team ran its winning streak to six straight games with a 94-84 Sunday afternoon victory over Oakland in front of a nationally televised audience.
Â
Wright State (11-7, 6-1 Horizon) now returns home to the Nutter Center for three consecutive home games, beginning Thursday night when the Raiders host Youngstown State in the annual Military Appreciation game.
Â
The six-game winning streak matches the Raiders' most recent winning run, a six-game winning stretch in February and March 2022 to close the regular season, win the Horizon League tournament and NCAA First Four game.
Â
On Sunday, the Raiders used an early 13-2 scoring run to jump out to a lead they never surrendered, taking a 49-30 lead into the break after shooting 62 percent overall with five three-pointers in the first half as they held Oakland to 31 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes. Wright State then began the second half with 10 of the first 15 points to eventually lead by 29 with 13 minutes to play.
Â
Oakland (9-9, 5-2 Horizon) chipped away down the stretch but was unable to ever get the Raider lead to single digits until the final two minutes. After the hosts shrunk the margin to seven with 71 seconds to play, Wright State broke the full court defense and Dominic Pangonis had an uncontested dunk then closed out the win with a 6-of-6 mark at the free throw line in the closing moments.
Â
Callaghan finished the afternoon shooting 8-of-11 overall with six three-pointers on the way to his 27 points, while Kellen Pickett also reset his career-best with 18 points and 11 rebounds for his second collegiate double-double. Callaghan, Pickett and TJ Burch – who turned in 18 points of his own – were all in double figures at the half, while Pangonis finished with 11 of his 13 points in the second half. Sam Alamutu added eight points and four rebounds off the bench while Andrea Holden chipped in six points with eight rebounds for the Raiders as well.
Â
Wright State shot 59 percent overall (35-of-59) with nine total three-pointers (9-18, 50 percent), going a perfect 15-of-15 from the free throw stripe, while Oakland rebounded to shot 47 percent overall (27-of-58) with a 37 percent mark (7-of-19) from deep as the hosts were 23-of-32 (72 percent) at the free throw line.
Â
Brody Robinson led Oakland with 35 points, while Tuburu Naivalurua added 15 points and Brett White had 11 points in the loss for the hosts.
