Raiders clinch series win over Milwaukee Saturday

DAYTON- The Wright State baseball team picked up a massive 8-3 win over Milwaukee Saturday afternoon. It is the fourth straight year the Raiders have won the first series of Horizon League play, with their last conference series opening loss coming to Oakland in 2022.

Wright State (7-12, 2-0 HL) will go for the series sweep of Milwaukee tomorrow afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium. The series finale is slated for 12 p.m., moved up from 1 p.m. due to forecasted storms in the afternoon.

Milwaukee got on the board first, thanks to a solo opposite-field shot off the bat of Dylan O'Connell.

The Raiders punched right back in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own. Brett Denby got the party started with a two-run single out to left that scored JP Peltier and Patrick Fultz. Cam Gilkerson would come up a couple of batters later and lay down a beautiful bunt single that scored Denby from third.

Fultz would double the Wright State lead to 5-1 with a two-run opposite-field shot in the bottom of the second.

Milwaukee would score two runs of their own in the top of the fourth on a Charlie Marion two-run single. Peltier would get a run right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring Andrew Duncan from second on an RBI single to left.

Griffen Paige got the start on the mound for Wright State and delivered his longest outing of the season. The left-hander went six innings, allowing three runs (two earned on six hits while striking out six Panthers.

The Raiders would get two more runs of insurance in the bottom of the fifth thanks to RBI base knocks from Braylen Blomquist and Hunter Warren.
Griffen Paige would turn the ball over to Michael Bilo out of the Wright State bullpen. The right-hander pitched three scoreless frames, striking out four en route to his first save of the season.
