Basketball Drops Tough 70-63 Double Overtime Decision at Coastal Carolina

Box Score

The Wright State men's basketball team led by four late in regulation, but Coastal Carolina rallied to force overtime and outscored the Raiders 15-8 in the second extra period to pull out a 70-63 double overtime win at Kimbel Arena in Conway, South Carolina, Sunday afternoon.

Coastal Carolina led 18-9 before Wright State went on a 12-2 run over a four-minute span to go in front 21-20 with 7:14 left in the first half. Neither team then had more than a four-point advantage the rest of the period and the game was tied at 28 heading into the break.

The second half was also closely contested as the Chanticleers had a five-point margin early, only to see WSU go up 51-47 on a Jordan Pleiman layup with 1:56 remaining. Coastal Carolina, however, scored the final four points, including a Moses Sonko layup with 56 seconds left, to force overtime.

A Tyrone Scott jumper gave the Raiders a 53-51 lead at the two-minute mark of the first overtime, but baskets from Sonko and Joseph Harris put Coastal Carolina back in front before Scott forced another overtime on a jumper with 31 seconds remaining.

The Chanticleers took control in the second overtime on a Matt Brennan dunk and two Leasure foul shots and put the game out of reach by hitting seven of eight foul shots over the final 1:20.

The Raiders outshot the Chanticleers 43-37 percent, but WSU hit just eight of 19 from the foul line, including two of 10 in the second half, compared to 18 of 26 for Coastal Carolina. CCU also held a 48-35 rebounding advantage.

Vaughn Duggins paced Wright State with 12 points while Pleiman posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. DaShaun Wood also had 11 points before fouling out with 35.8 seconds remaining in regulation and Reinaldo Smith chipped in nine points off the bench.

Jack Leasure led Coastal Carolina (1-2) with 22 points while two other Chanticleers posted double-doubles in Sonko (20 points, 11 rebounds) and Harris (12 points, 14 boards).

Wright State, now 1-1 on the season, concludes its season-opening three-game road swing Wednesday at Chicago State. Tip-off is 8:00 Eastern.
