Box Score The Wright State men's basketball team lost a tough road contest to Marshall 79-72 on Wednesday evening. The Raiders built a 15-point halftime lead, but Marshall outscored the Raiders 22-2 to open the second stanza and held off a late WSU charge to win the game.
The Green and Gold got off to a quick start, outscoring MU seven-to-zero to start the game, as Jordan Pleiman converted a lay-up and Vaughn Duggins nailed a three pointer and a jumper. The Raiders made four-of-seven shots to start the half, holding a 10-2 edge at the 14:57 mark.
The Raiders would never trail in the first half and built their lead to ten points when DaShaun Wood dropped a floater through the hoop at the 10:52 mark. With the lead at 12 points with seconds left, Duggins found a wide-open Will Graham in the corner and Graham delivered a three pointer as time expired.
In the first stanza, the Green and Gold shot 58-percent from the field (14-24) and out-rebounded the Herd 18-12. In the half, the Raiders tied their season-high with six, three point field goals and shot 55-percent from behind the arch. All eight Raiders that saw action scored, led by Duggins with eight points.
Marshall opened the second half with a flurry of baskets, outscoring the Raiders 22-2, to take a 44-39 lead at the 14:36 mark. The Herd pushed their lead to ten at the 9:30 mark when Travis Aikens grabbed an offensive rebound and converted the lay-up, giving MU a 54-44 lead.
The lead would swell to 15 points at 6:53 on a put back after a missed free throw. The Raiders took advantage of their opportunities down the stretch and battled back to within four at 76-72 at the 1:02 mark when Wood twisted through the lane and scored. Marshall, now 3-6 overall, would add a free throw and a lay-up at the buzzer to account for the final margin of victory.
In the game, Wood recorded a season-high 24 points and grabbed four rebounds while Duggins set a new career-high with 15 points. Drew Burleson and Todd Brown each grabbed six rebounds in the game and Duggins added a game-high eight assists.
The Raiders, now 3-4 overall, were outscored in the paint 40-26 and Marshall converted 17 WSU turnovers into 26 points.
The Raiders return home for the first home stand of the season, starting with a 5:00 game against Bowling Green on Saturday, December 16. Following the game there will be a live concert by the band Survivor, all in attendance are welcome to stay and enjoy the show.
