The Wright State men's basketball team rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit and led by seven with seven minutes to play, but Bowling Green outscored the Raiders 19-9 the rest of the way to pull out a 59-56 decision Saturday night at the Nutter Center.
WSU was up one early on a DaShaun Wood jumper, but the Falcons outscored the Raiders 19-7 over the next 10 minutes to take a 23-12 lead at the 5:07 mark of the first half.
Down 29-22 at the break, Wright State came out on fire to start the second half, using an 18-2 run over the opening 6:22, 11 of those coming from Wood, to go in front 40-31. After a Drew Burleson three-point play with 7:08 remaining, Wright State still led 47-40.
Threes from Dusan Radivojevic and Martin Samarco, however, started the Falcons on their comeback and Bowling Green grabbed the lead for good as Ryne Hamblet rattled in a three from the right wing with 1:08 left.
Vaughn Duggins hit one of two from the foul line at the 34.6-second mark to trim the deficit to one and hit a jumper with 9.9 seconds left to again make it a one-point game, but Darryl Clements answered each time with two foul shots, the second set with 7.6 seconds remaining, to up the Bowling Green edge to three.
Wright State had one last chance, but a Todd Brown three attempt from the top of the circle went off the left side of the rim as time expired.
Bowling Green outshot the Raiders 53-30 percent and was eight of 19 from three-point range to just one of 12 for WSU, but Wright State made up the difference by forcing turnovers (17-9, resulting in a 22-12 advantage in points off of turnovers), collecting rebounds (40-31, including a 21-2 margin in offensive boards) and foul shooting as the Raiders went 19 of 31 to BGSU's nine of 14.
Wood led all scorers with 23 points for Wright State, while Duggins added 11 and Jordan Pleiman had a near double-double of 10 points and nine rebounds. Burleson had six points to go with his 10 boards.
Samarco paced Bowling Green (5-3) with 22 points and eight rebounds while Radivojevic chipped in 12 off the bench.
Wright State, now 3-5 on the season, will host a pair of games next week, taking on Marist on Tuesday, December 19, and Chicago State on Thursday, December 21, both starting at 7:00.
